What Amiga OS 4.x games should I try?

Post by amigasociety »

I am not an avid gamer but would like to download and play a few games on my AmigaOne X1000.

What Amiga OS 4.1u5 compatible games can you recommend for me to try.

I am open to whatever games tiggle your fancy whether it be popular or just fun to play.

Offer me some titles of what you like to play and I will give them a whirl.

Thanks

TJ

I like to play Sword of Fargoal, but then I owned the first version of the game on my VIC-20 (Still have it!) since I was 14. Good old Rogue-like dungeon crawling, but with graphics and sound. Ok, so it's not so graphically impressive. It's still a lot of fun.

Oh, and Flare, which is somewhat of a Diablo clone. Seeing a pattern here?

There are plenty of games that does'nt require 3D acceleration.
So many... here is just a few :

Games from http://www.amiboing.de/

Battle of Wesnoth :

Open Transport Tycoon:

BOH :

1941 Deluxe (and some other great stuff) :

Giddy 3 (runs nicely with the latest wazp3D with the composite mode on)
http://www.giddy3.co.uk/

Some using allegro library such as zombie pox or alex4.

The Sqrx series, etc.

There are plenty of 'engine' such a ScummVM (ie return to monkey island), Residual (grim fandango), Dune Legacy, Stargus (starcraft but a bit buggy)

All the classic amiga games can be played with RunInUAE.

More over, if you like emulation there is far more good games from Playstation, SuperNES, PC DOS, NeoGeo etc. just have a look here.

Enjoy!

@amigasociety

I'm interested in what feedback you might have about your experiences with gaming on the X1000 with the recommendations you've gotten here and elsewhere, and any other games you might have discovered on your own.

I smell a new video coming soon :D

Sounds like my kind of game but not finding it on Aminet or OS4Depot.

I take it this was a commercial game only and unless you own it, we are out of luck?

Thanks for the tip and yes, more videos to come one day. hehehe

DaveBraco, thanks for all the links. Will try some.

It's a freebie, and it's on OS4Depot.

Forgive my ignorance but I downloaded the game, double click the SwordOfFargoal icon (looks like a scredriver icon to me) and then I get a message window where it asks for Enter command arguments. A click of the Execute button in this window does nothing.

So, how do you launch this game?

@amigasociety
I'm not really a gamer, but as far as commercial games that I know work on OS4 & the X1000:
* SwampDefense is a new commercial game (I tested the demo, which is pretty fun on it's own).
* Payback is a great (software-rendered) 3D game, although it needs the latest update (and a bit of fiddling) to get it to work on OS4 (I posted a how-to on AmigaWorld I think). Probably still available to buy if you hunt for it...
* Myst works pretty well, but I'm not sure if you can still get hold of it.
* CrossFire 2 is a great game, but as it only runs in 320x240 (or so) it looks quite small on a 640x480 screen, plus you have to tell OS4 to ignore some DSIs. I recall seeing it still available to buy.

As far as free (and shareware) games go, typically from OS4Depot:
* AsteroidsTR (get from Aminet); a really good little shoot'em-up, works well on OS4.
* Secret Maryo Chronicles; very polished modern Super Mario Brothers clone.
* Open Sonic; a good (if low-res) Sonic clone.
* DoomAttack; an old port of Doom, but still the best IMHO! Needs some configuring to get it to work on OS4, and sadly no music, but plays great.
* Tetris Queen; good old Tetris game, but no sound or music.

There are lots of really good old Classic Amiga games (from floppy disk days), which in ADF or WHDLoad format can be run straight away using RunInUAE. The problem is getting hold of them in the first place, if you don't own an original copy... Although there are a few such games which you can download legally for free (thanks to permission from the author).
