right, I decided to go for mintppc once again, however I encountered this problem:

glxgears doesn't run with about 1700 fps, I just get 400 fps ? When starting from a terminal, I get:
As stated in the manual, I installed using vmlinux39NH kernel, but now I am booting with vmlinux39. I also created 10-vsync.conf and radeon.sh.
I do remember, that glxgears worked fine on my first mintppc install about 3 months ago.
Any ideas ? THX gerograph

glxgears has a few quirks. We discoverd when testing the Live USB install that glxgears reported ~500 fps instead of ~1500/1600 fps but the 3D performance was OK and unchanged. We traced this to a setting in the xorg.conf file and once we changed that to reflect the actual gfx card installed, glx gears reported the correct speed ~1500 fps (however the 3D performance did not change and was unaffected in any case).

However, having said that I don't think you would have this issue with the Unbuntu installtion when following the steps in the guide?

It is not possible to get 3d functions to work in ubuntu pcc.
Ubuntu is still a delicious os but 3d does not work. Use instead mint or the last debian to that

I tried glxgears under MintPPC !!! (I reverted back to Mint for a while...)

I presume you mean Gome 3D desktop?

2d/3D Unuity 2D desktop and Classic Gnome desktop work OK with 2d/3d graphics hardware acceleration.

In the end Pat says Ubuntu (Unity 3D) doesn't work for me
In the following post says both Fernecho and myself that we did not have succeeded with Ubuntu and 3d in our experiments.
For me it is all kinds of Gnome and unity. There freeze during login.

Sorry, you are quite correct. Blame my confusion over terminology

Although the Unity2D desktop works OK (3D hardware acceleration is not currently activated under this desktop).

2D/3D grx hardware acceleration is activated under Ubuntu's Gnome Classic desktop.
