Give up on you? We are like the US Marines, we leave no one behind! ;-)

I'm glad you are now enjoying the benefits of 3D hardware accelerated graphics on your AmigaONE X1000. :-)

@ PatW

I would love to have Ubuntu 12.04 running on the X1000.

Will there become an easy install option for us Linus newbies to install it or do we have to go through all these special steps you had to do?

Hi TJ

It should be as straightforward as the Debian Squeeze or MintPPC installs :)
It will need a new kernel (and maybe an initrd) which you will be able to download and the Ubuntu alternate CD. I just have to do the install again once or twice more to fine tune it and document it.

I think it may not be possible to play 1080p smoothly.. There is an option in VLC to use GPU acceleration - maybe that will make a difference?

Wow, I never would have figured all that out. :-D
Got it all in & now getting 1700 fps with glxgears. :-D

Is there an option for a HD 4850 card or any others? I figure the 4650 & 4850 are close.

Back to using vmlinux39, even got blender to run, but not sure it's running right. The benchmark doesn't give me a dual core option or render time. Something to work on.

Thanks Pat & Trevor for not giving up on me. :-D

Ken
Hi Ken

I'm glad that it worked out :D

I think the HD4850 will probably work out fine just as a straight swap out assuming it doesn't require different kernel firmware/microcode.

Once Pat finishes his Ubuntu installation instructions I'll issue an update to the guide.

It's not only 'special steps' to install various distros, it is also the subtle differences among distros. For example the Apache web server in Fedora keeps all it's configure info in one file, httpd.conf, while Debian breaks this up into several files. Although the configuration may be the same for both, how you arrive at that point is very different (for doing the same thing).

I love playing around with various distros and setups, but I also know that getting help for even a simple problem may not happen, even for distros based on the same source. Think of as trying to get OS4 help from someone using an original unmodified A500 with the original OS. They are the same, but different.

We are lucky that our hardware is common for for all those having the same motherboard as it is easier to work out problems and setups. So when is too many Linux distros just too much Linux?

Gotta go put my soapbox away.

I have here problems to play encrypted DVD^s with Mint11.
I had with Debian no problems to play encrypted DVD^s.
I have tried this but it doesn^t solve the problem

$ dpkg -s libdvdcss2
Package: libdvdcss2
Status: install ok installed

$ dpkg -s libdvdread4
Package: libdvdread4
Status: install ok installed

$ uname -a

$ regionset
regionset version 0.1 -- reads/sets region code on DVD drives
Current Region Code settings:
RPC Phase: II
type: NONE
vendor resets available: 4
user controlled changes resets available: 5
drive plays discs from region(s):, mask=0xFF

I have set my region code to 2 for European

Can somebody play encrypted DVD^s with Mint11?
