Well I finally reinstalled gnome-session-flashback with the help of aptitude. I also removed gdm3 as it just kept flicking between terminals and I couldn't log in. In the process I ended up installing Flashback with Compiz and Metacity as well as MATE and LXDE desktops. Unfortunately none of them work. They all try and use hardware 3d or it looks like it because they just come back to the login screen. Maybe I need gnome-classic or something. I didn't see any obvious errors this time. I didn't have so much trouble when I upgraded to Xenial. Just a bit of tweaking with flashback and using that as the desktop. But this Bionic is a real pain. It just won't budge. Once it's broken it can never be fixed it looks like. Well I've had a go over it the last few days and can't crack it. :?:

Hi
I chose mate because I could get it to work. Not all Mate packages were possible to install or they didn't exist.
When I had installed almost all packages, there was only the option to choose LXDE, mate and openbox. Gnome was not an option. (I don't know why)
I have installed 3147 packages and de-selected 8 when they caused problems. I have only used synaptic and have not selected more than about 100 packages. I have always de-selected packages that caused problems if they were installed. For example, if the installation wanted to delete packages I had already installed. I think that the order of the installation meant that I finally had almost all files installed. Even though the gnome packages were also installed, it does not give me the option to select Gnome on my system. Synaptic had no problems downloading packages. Maybe because I did not select very many at a time.
I found there is program missing. For example, filezille cannot be installed. The main package is missing. All the programs I have tested, such as libreoffice, gimp, shotwell, vlc, dosbox, bos wars, caja, gparted, mate terminal, docky, inkscape, mypaint and probably more, work here.
