further to add;

to save all changes

press esc key
then type x
press return

to exit without saving any changes

press esc key
then type q
press return
you will be asked to confirm if you'd like to exit without saving

do it a few times and you'll realise there isn't much to AmigaDos afterall

btw, typing the following is more direct and doesn't rely on you being in the root directory or Sys: before editing

ed s:startup-sequence

OR to make the s/startup-sequence work from anywhere put Sys: infront of it ie ed Sys:s/startup-sequence

also note if you go to ed a file and it opens a blank screen you know you've done something wrong. Just exit without
saving and re-evaluate (unless you're actually creating a new file)

Or don't use the horribly ancient Ed program, and avoid the Shell entirely, and instead use NotePad which is usually on AmiDock:

Click on NotePad. Click on it's Open button. Open S:Startup-Sequence using the file requester (you can just type that & press enter if you want). Make the suggested changes to the file, and then click the Save button. No need for scary Esc key sequences!

This is very true of course (I prefer using CygnusEd called by DirOpus for my editing) but for the sake of a small level of complication using the Shell is a great way to learn about the workings below the bonnet

What I mean is spending a bit of time in the shell is a good thing eventually "accumulated familiarity"

Navigation via any GUI directory interface is good too but we all know you're a tinkerer so you've probably already mastered this!

Shell syntax! now that's a little harder to grasp at times!

That's very strange as the default for running the soundplayer boot up sound is after loadwb. (AmigaOS4.1 Update 5 "First Contact" Installation CD)

Anyway, I'm glad we finally got to the bottom of the issue.

Thought we decided to move it so it played while loading, so by time WB had booted the startup sound had finished.
I will move it back in all future builds.

Hey guys,

I just got a CMI8738 audio card for my X1K that looks a lot like the one
pictured and I too was getting some chirping & crackling sounds when an app
would start sounds (AmIRC, AmigaAMP, etc).

The noise appears to be virtually abolished by changing the anti-click
settings in AHI.

Specifically, near the bottom of the "Advanced settings" tab of AHI Prefs
I set the "Default anti-click time" to 40 ms.

Maybe this helps what you guys are running into?

I have noticed that when I click on play a test sound in AHI prefs with CMI8738, nothing happens. Is this common?
In all but music unit, the only sound modes visible are those in the pic below.


However if I choose a different sound mode in music unit (see below) I get a sound from play test sound. CMI8738 does not produce a test sound.

It's the same card that AmigaKit put in my X1000 that just arrived earlier this month. My X1000 had scratchy sound too. The scratch occurs at the beginning of almost every sound play. It's especially annoying with a program like Jabberwocky that uses sound notification for incoming chat messages. The driver (CMI8738) is the same one that is used in the µA1 I had. The µA1 had scratchy sound until Davy Wentzler released an updated CMI8738 driver for the µA1. Apparently the driver needs another update to work properly with the sound card that AmigaKit is using.

I pulled the Soundblaster card from my SAM Flex and put it in my X1000 which fixed my scratchy sound. It's ironic that the SB cards are not recommended for OS4 hardware but seem to work the better than other cards.

P.S. My Soundblaster card was used and cost me $5.
