Hi Mechanic,
Thanks a lot for testing the kernels.
Which issues have you seen with the kernel 4.19 on Fienix?
Cheers,
Christian

Hi Christian,
On a fresh install the 4.19 works just fine. However, after doing a full upgrade when selecting the Mate Terminal it will pop the terminal window open and immediately it disappears. So pretty much it becomes unusable.

Hi Christian
I found a solution. It was kernel 4.19 that was the problem. Tried kernel 5.4 and got boot error. Tried 4.20 and booted fine and Mate terminal works.

Hi Peter,
Please post the boot error.
@All
I compiled the latest longterm kernel
4.19.85 today. Unfortunately the issue with the MATE Terminal still exists. I can't solve it because I don't see any error messages after the crash. I tried it with gdb but without any success.
Cheers,
Christian

The MATE Terminal also crashes with the longterm kernel 4.14.

I tried 4.19 on my fresh install, and the Mate Terminal works. However, this install did not get a full upgrade, only selected programs have been installed or upgraded. So where the problem lays is anybody's guess. Chalk it up to one of Doctor Strangelove's predictions.

Hi Christian
I have installed and tested the debian64 img file caseycullen has shared in the x5000 forum. I inserted my xorg.cong file and started debian with no problems. Everything works stable.

New Fienix Boot Image
Thanks!

Hi Casey,
Happy New Year and many thanks for the new
Fienix 2020-01 image!

I successfully tested it with the
RC4 of kernel
5.5 on my X1000 and X5000/40 today. The good news is, that Xorg works without any problems!

I think my idea with only updating Mesa wasn't a good idea.
The hardware 3D acceleration works great with the new Mesa
19.3.1/LLVM 9.0.0 and with my
Radeon HD6970 (Cayman XT). I tested it with SuperTuxKart, Quake-HD-Redux and with Yamagi Quake2.
I have found some small issues. The automatic network configuration doesn't work. I always had to manually configure my network cards with "
dhclient" after the start of Fienix. I was able to solve this issue with installing the package "
network-manager-gnome". Before I had to remove the package "
rdnssd" because it isn't possible to install the package "
network-manager-gnome" if the package "
rdnssd" is installed.
The second issue isn't really a Fienix issue. The automatic configuration of my analog TV card
Typhoon TView RDS + FM Stereo (BT878 chip) doesn't work. I had to set
card=53 for the
bttv kernel module.
After that it works without any problems.
If you add the following line to
/etc/modprobe.d/tv_bttv.conf then you don't need the commands above.
# nano /etc/modprobe.d/tv_bttv.conf
I wasn't able to install the package "
blueman" for using my Bluetooth devices. Error message:
Code: Select all
blueman:
Depends: gir1.2-nm-1.0 but it is not installable

Casey, Fienix is the best and most modern distribution we have currently! The games work faster with Fienix as with ubuntu MATE! Many thanks for your work!
