I compiled the alpha2 of kernel 6.15 with the first PowerPC updates today.
Okay so tested this now also. Booting on Xenial, Zesty, Fienix and Debian 64. Xenial was slow as usual and a log is below. What strange is that the root volume is already mounted according to the log, so it's not still looking it, but systemd is stuck on a job waiting for it. Along with other errors and fails listed. And I just noticed now some strange glitch with my Nautilus Python with rogue files it looks. :?:

Perhaps because I'm running the latest unstable and not last stable, I find Debian 64 to be a poor desktop. Apart from Synaptic missing. Firefox is broken and crashes silently. The default Web browser in menu doesn't do anything. I installed Epiphany but that's broken as well. Though it looks like it conflicts because our kernels don't support user name spaces.

Code: Select all

damien@ubuntu:~$ epiphany
bwrap: Creating new namespace failed, likely because the kernel does not support user namespaces. bwrap must be installed setuid on such systems.

I will add it to the next alpha.

I'll test when ready.

In the mean time my Nautilus is wrecked somewhat. I couldn't get open as admin working as the package wasn't showing up before I fixed all my sources, likely because of powerpc missing from release files. I found this open-as-administrator_1.5~precise package but I didn't realise it was evil until after the fact. It was marked as all archs but I missed that it was constructed in a bad way. It hides a zip in the files it extracts which is wrong but I didn't see it at first. So I installed it and found out it installed x86 libs to the system! I later removed it and the libs but it wrecked Nautlus and it's never recovered. I just then reinstalled some python-nautilus tools by purging then reinstalling. After the purge there's no errors. But when reinstalling nautilus-admin the error comes back! I have no idea why but python keeps trying to load /usr/lib/i386-linux-gnu//libpython2.7.so.1.0 as you see in the log. It's driving me nuts! I'll likely need to purge everything using python2.7 and nautilus with the desktop. All for some stupid i386 it planted in some file python file! :!:

New for the alpha3:
  • X1000: User namespaces (CONFIG_USER_NS=y). They allow unprivileged user code access to call kernel code that was historically restricted to root. This is already activated in the e5500 kernel config.
  • DRM updates (including Radeon and VirtIO GPU updates)
  • Fbdev updates
  • PCI updates
  • Modules updates (including PowerPC updates)

So I found the problem on bwrap can be solved also by doing a:

Code: Select all

chmod u+s /usr/bin/bwrap
But in my case looks like it is in vain. Once I did that Web worked and loaded up the browser. But it crashed badly and immediately took down the system. Looks related to my Radeon issue. I think my hardware is incompatible or my software is just too new. Either way this is the end of the road of my new install. Unless I can downgrade the packages to the last ppc64 stable which might be a good idea right now. It really is unstable now! :-D

Code: Select all

Hi
I have tested Debian 64 trixie/sid with vmlinux6.15_a3 .It's working.
I would like to say a few words about my Debian 64. It is absolutely my favorite Linux on my X1000.
They have flaws and bugs but less than , most of my other systems.
I use the following programs and these programs are stable on my Debian 64.
a few of them can be seen in my screenshot

I have samba running and have direct access to files on my main computer (Ubuntu 24 lts)
I have kdeconnect running to exchange files with my android phone

I use Libreoffice for word processing and spreadsheets
I use Gramps for genealogy

Rawtheapee, inkscape, shootwell for photos (missing a ppc version of Darktable)
Mypaint for drawing on my drawing tablet

Music and sound Vlc, Brasero, Lxmusic and smplayer

I use Articfox for browser

Filezilla for ftp

worker, Caja, Mate-terminal, Disk, Gparted and Pluma are daily work programs

Apt for updating and installing

Have a nice day
