Re: New kernels

Post by Hypex »

Now I have another issue. Booted up the 6.14 RC1 and this time and my system was totally broken. Ended up at a shell and kernel crashing on boot. It lists errors in OF variables with cells missing. That sounds like the problems we had experienced earlier. Don't know why suddenly the system cannot boot. :-?

Here's an excerpt from dmesg log:

Re: New kernels

Have you booted it via CFE or via the X1Boot Manager?

The RC1 and RC2 of kernel 6.14 work here without any problems on my X1000.

Yes it was using the X1Boot Manager. I tend to test with a ramdisk if it makes any difference. My stable Fienix boots without ramdisk on kernel 6.12.

I suppose it would be good to test it from CFE. Could just set my bootargs. And boot kernel from HDD.

Well, as it happens the RC1 works again. I've compared kernel logs and in the working kernel it still has missing address-cells. But the kernel isn't tainted and can continue though it does crash.

There is a message about no reserved memory which I find concerning. But also messages about using an early ioremap(). Could this be related?

Code: Select all

No, I don't think so. I think you have overwritten some dtb stuff with your boot manager.

Yes, installed and tested kernel 5.10.232, working fine on my Ubuntu.
No, I don't think so. I think you have overwritten some dtb stuff with your boot manager.
I'm not sure how it would have done that. Unless I need to reserve some memory to protect the dtb area. It copies any ramdisk and kernel to same spot as CFE uses and launches it with kernel at $0 and ramdisk at $24000000.

Anyhow, I did some more testing, I tried booting it direct from CFE and it also crashed! So something is up here on my system. For comparison here are some values from kernel.

I've realised one difference from above. The ramdisk should be unpacked even though the kernel will detect that. But my boot loader will also unpack ramdisks. To account for the differences I had to rebuild ramdisk from Ubuntu as I accidentally trashed it. So the ramdisk is smaller. Apart from using device as root in bootargs from CFE so not needing ramdisk.

Here's my loading commands:

Code: Select all

vmlinux boot -z -elf -noints -nousb -fs=amigafs ide0.1,dh12:vmlinux
ramdisk ramdisk -z -addr=0x24000000 -fs=amigafs ide0.1,dh12:ramdisk
bootargs console=tty0 root=/dev/sdb3 ide0.1,dh12:boot
Also I just noticed a rogue addition on the end of my bootargs. :-P

Please try to boot it without ramdisk.

I successfully boot my 6.14 kernels with:

Code: Select all

boot -elf -noints -fatfs -z cf0:zImage-6.14
vmlinux is not compressed, so it cannot be booted with -z.

Hi
I tried vmlinux-5.10.232 on ubuntu-16.04 and it booted fine, but after login 16.04 froze. Tried on my standard kernel (5.11) but Ubuntu 16.04 froze again. Therefore I guess it has nothing to do with kernel-5.10. Then booted Ubuntu 17 remix and 5.10.232 booted without any problems.
Have a nice day

So tested without ramdisk. From both CFE and my loader. The result was almost the same. With crashes on both kernel boots. The only difference is it either drops to a shell or boots to desktop.
vmlinux is not compressed, so it cannot be booted with -z.
Oh yes, that's just a quirk of my setup. My vmlinux file is GZ compressed. Otherwise it wouldn't load off FFS. :-D

I tried to copy a raw vmlinux and zImage to USB stick, but CFE is even more unreliable than it used to be, as no files showed up so gave up on trying to load from a fat volume.

I cannot see why it can boot to a desktop and at other times fail. There wasn't much more info. Just that lightdm fails to load.

Code: Select all

fienix@fienix:~$ systemctl status lightdm.service

x lightdm.service - Light Display Manager
     Loaded: loaded (8;;file://fienix/lib/systemd/system/lightdm.service/lib/systemd/system/lightdm.

       Docs: 8;;man:lightdm(1)man:lightdm(1)8;;
    Process: 2422 ExecStart=/usr/sbin/lightdm (code=exited, status=127)
   Main PID: 2422 (code=exited, status=127)
        CPU: 5ms

Warning: some journal files were not opened due to insufficient permissions.
In addition, something has managed to destroy my X1Boot mount. Systemd has no record of it. I failed to mount it manually as I don't recall the affs options and I kept getting root errors when reading files. Before that the dev-disk-by\x2dlabel-Boot.device/start job takes over a minute to finish. :-?

Code: Select all

[ **] Job dev-disk-by\x2dlabel-Boot.devic…tart running (1min 30s / no limit)

[ TIME ] Timed out waiting for device Ķice - /dev/disk/by-label/Boot.

[DEPEND] Dependency failed for boot-x1boot.mount - X1Boot Mounter.
But check here. This looks like an old issue. Here I'm getting the #address and #size errors as well.
