OH,

I've tried it with no motherboard and 16MB ram on the motherboard itself. I have only one (1) Mediator setup (card + bus-board) and under OS3.9 (once some setting were worked out) it works fine. There were problems with the MMU setting, but that got worked out with AmigaKit (over their 10/100 Ethernet card).

Ok. Do another test than please: remove everything from Mediator bus board except Mediator card and your Radeon Card. Setup Mediator jumpers as advise in Classic OS 4.1 FAQ (winsize and swap config should be closed if I remember correctly but please check it), also insert Redeon card into correct slot (second from the bottom). Try first booting from Installation CD using installation floppy and let us know what happens. If this will not work - remove Radeon and insert your ZII/III RTG card into correct slot (do not forget about setting jumpers on Mediator correctly) and repeat booting procedure.

Regarding the Mediator jumpers on the A4000T, there is no need for trial and error. Please see this thread on how to set them up and why: http://forum.hyperion-entertainment.biz ... f=15&t=172

I believe with your 256MB Radeon you will need to set WINSIZE to closed, and it is best to set the other jumper to closed as well.

Regarding CSPPC boot menu memory settings, you can set it to faster than 70ns if your memory is fast enough but it is safer to set it slower. Mine runs fine at fastest settings, but I have 50ns memory. What is the speed of your memory?

As you say all your hardware works fine in OS3.9 I will presume that at least for your cards that hardware is working fine (including the Mediator and Radeon)
It was not clear to me whether it works fo you in OS4.x with the FastATA but not the Mediator, so probably best to leave the FastATA out for now. I did not try to install for the Mediator with no cards installed so put the Radeon in the recommended slot in the install guide/FAQ (one free slot in between it and the Mediator bus board)

A few differences in OS4.x from OS3.9:
1. You cannot use the onboard A4000T motherboard SCSI at all
2. Radeon 256MB (if detected as full 256MB) needs Mediator WINSIZE set to 512MB (jumper closed)
3. You must disable Maprom in CSPPC boot menu

To boot off CD you need to follow the instructions to maybe change the settings in the CSPPC boot menu for the CD's SCSI ID. From memory there are instructions to follow either in the Classic Install guide or the Classic FAQ if the CD fails to boot.

Can you please also post your showconfig and pciinfo (I think that is the Mediator command that shows memory allocated) output from OS3.9.

OK,

I was able to get OS4.1 Update2 up and running with: no motherboard ram, properly closed Mediator jumpers, Radeon Card in Slot 2, but only from a 68-pin HHD with Boot partition <2GB (no CF Cards allowed on the SCSI chain -- and I do love my SCM PCD-50B scsi card reader). The OS does not recognize my 10/100 Ethernet card (from AmigaKit), my "spider-brand" USB card from Elbox, nor by SoundBlaster 128 Card (from only knows where); previously all worked well under OS 3.9. Running the Mediator install is futile, as is all resistance to the Borg of OS4.1.

Again I've got the guts of my Ami splayed open awaiting further help.... But at least I got this far

By the way,

Without USB or internet access, it will take me a bit of effort to post PciInfo and ShowConfig.

(I'll have to be imaginative)

A bit OT but correct me if I'm wrong but I belive that Spider is not supported under OS 4.1 - I only have Deneb so I never tested but the official compatybility list does not mention it either: http://forum.hyperion-entertainment.biz ... ?f=15&t=93

Only following cards are on the list:
Deneb USB Controller (requires Poseidon 4.x)
Subway USB Controller (requires Poseidon 4.x)
Highway USB Controller (requires Poseidon 4.x)

Just keep in mind that some hardware/software that works perfectly fine under 3.9 may not work under 4.x due to changes in the operating system and (lack of) drivers. In such case you will not be able to resolve issue by reconfiguration hardware.

Your machine configuration from the showconfig and pciinfo outputs looks fine. I can see that if you did not have both Mediator jumpers closed it probably would not boot as in pci space the radeon takes just over 256MB and you have no spare zorro3 address space unless you put your max 128MB address space zorro3 card(s) in between the mediator busboard and the e3b card (to take up spare memory address space between $61000000 and $70000000).

You did not mention you had a ZorRAM installed but it fits in the address space - just (I am guessing you have this board installed from your showconfig output). If you want to use the FastATA and Deneb you will need to put them both between the Mediator busboard and the ZorRAM. I don't know how much address space the FastATA will take, but you can at minimum put Deneb there as I have.

I believe you should be able to safely put your motherboard memory back in.

Regarding your other 3 PCI cards not working, I believe they are all incompatible with OS4 as they use DMA which OS4 does not support with the Mediator in the way that OS3.9 has a workaround. SB PCI 128 can only be used to passthrough audio from paula using audio cables to save you changing speaker connections from OS3.9 to OS4.x. You can confirm this card compatibility information by looking at the OS4 compatibility list linked to above.

I would suggest for networking the Realtek 8029AS as that should work in both OS3.9 and 4.1. For USB, use the Deneb (I think only in PIO mode). You might be able to use the Deneb for networking and sound with a USB to network adapter and a USB to sound adapter but I am not sure if that also works in OS4.x as I know those work in OS3.9 with Poseidon.

EDIT: btw, am glad you actally got it booting - would have been combination of mediator jumpers and zorro board positions. If you also want to use your GVP EGS spectrum 28/24 you either need to put it between the busboard and the ZorRAM (if there is enough address space there) or if you force it to Zorro2 mode using its jumper, you can put it anywhere.

Thanks for the info!

Yes, the Deneb works fine (with Luciferin on Compatibility black-list & no-popups), though one reason I bought the stupidly expensive Spider card ($90 +$39 shipping -- very eBay-like) was to save my [now rare] Deneb for other setups (silly me, I have a Turtle USB Audio sound dongle and a USB based Ethernet one, though I'm only on a 12 MBit down / 3MBit up cable connection); The ZorRam is not really needed in OS 3.9, but acts as a SWAP partition in 4.1; what do you think, as an option, is going back to using my X-surf card, and pulling the Generic 8139 card? It gets 10MBits as does the 8029 card and is universally viable in ZII & ZIII machines.

The SB128 "pass-through" confuses me, could you explain the connection? The SB128 has 3 inputs inside, one (mic) input and face-plate outputs on the back -- as I'm sure you know; the A4000T C404 connection is an input, but that's about the end of my knowledge base (although, to be honest I only rarely use the audio).

The OS4.1 compatibility list won't load for me, "Problem loading page." <-- Somehow there is poetic justice in that sentence!

I'm thinking I'm pretty close to accepting the fact that OS4.1 "support" is so lacking in both hardware and software, that I'll just stay with OS3.9 as my sole working environment and see if anything changes over the next 26 years of Amiga use.
