But I already found my first big mistake of the day: confusing the Workbench window with the Workbench screen!

I'm back to try to figure out the Amiga key thing and still have my hopes up about that.

But two new problems today already. When I try to get my email with Odyssey, I am told
"We’re sorry, but your account is temporarily unavailable. We apologize for the inconvenience and suggest trying again in a few minutes. You can view the Google Workspace Status Dashboard for the current status of the service."
This is at gmail.hawaii.edu. I did stumble on a way to apparently log on to the UHM computer system, but so far that does me no good.

The other partly new problem involves graphics. I knew before that I was unable to load certain kinds of graphics but I don't remember whether they just didn't open. Today I can't find any that do anything but open a MultiViewer window and crash the system. I haven't finished trying all kinds of graphics yet because each test requires a reboot, but I have so far found that these kinds do crash my OS4: .png, .jpg, .bmp, .iff; any suggestions about how to look for the cause?

wrt your email...
yes, the email cendors change their sites all the time, odyssey wont keep up and the sites break sooner or later...

you can tryto turn off Javascript...it helped with mine, but yours might not

wrt pictures in multiviewer crashing...
that sounds like your pic datatype are either outdated or dont work with your setup (anymore)

can you try to recopy the datatypes drawer from your install CD?

Also try a third party picture viewer to rule out some other cause

The normal way to get my email is "https://gmail.hawai.edu," but that only gets me the "termporarily unavailable" message.

I tried just "https://hawaii.edu" with more interesting results:

"Log In Successful

"You, mathias, have successfully logged into the UH Login Service. However, you are seeing this page because UH Login does not know about your target destination and how to get you there. Examine the authentication request again and make sure a target service/application that is authorized and registered with UH Login is specified.

"When you are finished, for security reasons, please log out and exit your web browser."

Your suggestion about finding datatypes on my original install disk is also insteresting. I wonder if I have such a disk among all this crap. Did I ever have one, or did I install from the internet? I'll do some searching.

Poking through my current hard drive I found two lists of zip disk contents, and one of them included what looked like dozens of data types, starting with the ones I am interested in. I hope my searching will turn up those discs too.

Searching through those lists results in another frustration. If I go to "Find" in the menu, it gets me to the first case of the thing I'm looking for. I should be able to get to the next one with "Amiga N" if only I knew how to type "Amiga" on my Logitech keyboard.

email:

i don't know nothing about the workings of your email provider, so take everything i say with a pinch of salt :-)

redo your login steps on a PC or smartphone to see where it stops on your miggy, that might help ruling out unsupported steps on the amiga side.
nb:
sometimes i need to log in from a PC to make it work on amiga again

datatypes:

you can find third party datatypes on os4depot aswell
http://www.os4depot.net/index.php?funct ... type/image
the warpxxx ones might be interesting?

AMIGA keys:

AMIGA keys on PC keyboards are normally left and right of the space bar, most of the time the WINDOWS keys are translated to them.

taken from here:
https://www.markround.com/blog/2018/10/ ... iga-x5000/
One thing to note is that the keyboard didn’t seem to function as expected unless it was plugged into one of the black USB ports. I could type OK, and it worked in the U-boot environment, but the Windows keys weren’t recognised as “Amiga” keys, and I also had problems with the other modifier keys like Ctrl and Alt not being recognised. Moving the keyboard to the black USB ports seemed to resolve this, though.
PS:
you can also use the menu to click on "next find" with your mouse...as workaround

Good luck and have fun

I'm probably spending too much time looking at all the mysteries in my OS4.

In S: I find Startup-Sequence and Startup-Sequence-preUpd2. The latter is version 53.11; the former, is 53.12 and contains the following lines that 53.11 lacks:
Assign >nil: exists APPDIR:
if NOT WARN
Path ADD APPDIR:
endif

The two files seem to be identical in all other respects.

I also have User-Startup, User-Startup.1, and User-Startup.2 in S:. All three the same as far as I can tell! I'm inclined to delete three oddballs here.

My Apps: drawer is totally amazing! AirScan? AmiCygnix? AmigaAMP3? AMIVNC4? I vaguely remember using AmimCygnix maybe.
"archives," full of 27 lha's that I'm afraid to look at, plus "x.org.conf.zip" and another AmigaAMP3:, EnhancerSoftware, and zTools.

A few things I remember using a lot: bzip2, DigitalUniverse, FinalCalc, FinalWriter. FontWalker, not sure. FryingPan, Ftpd, yes. IgnitionOS4?
JIStoJi, I wrote. "libepeg"? Programming is full of my old aRexx programs. Rave and SMTube more mysteries. I can guess what VPDF is for and that it would crash me.

Time spent well exploring your Amiga doesn't return badly :-).

Those extra files are probably automatic backups made by some installer script. They don't do any harm. Delete them if you want, but they also act as some sort of history helping you to find out what was done to your system over time. E.g. the lines about APPDIR: in Startup-Sequence were added in one of the updates to AmigaOS4.1FE (don't remember exactly which one), where the APPDIR: feature was introduced to the system.

AirScan is (I think) a program to utilize the scanner part of a printer/scanner which is connected to your LAN. AmiCygnix is a complete UNIX-like environment allowing certain programs to run under AmigaOS which were developed for Linux. AmigaAMP3 is an MP3 (and more) music player, very nice. AMIVNC3 is a tool to make your Amiga Workbench available over the network, so you can remote control it from a machine running a VNC client (or something like that, don't use it since many years, it's quite slow, especially with my large Workbench screen). The LhA archives you could safely look into using e.g. the Unarc tool, just looking and reading any doc files is nothing to be afraid of.

FontWalker I don't know, probably a tool to search through your installed fonts. FryingPan is a program to burn CDs. IgnitionOS4 is a nice spreadsheet program which is still actively developed. Rave is a fairly recent audio file editing tool, also still developed. SMTube I believe is something to help watching YouTube videos from your browser, don't use it myself (but I don't use YouTube much). VPDF is a PDF file reader similar to AmiPDF (but better). Shouldn't crash on you, though.

Hope this helps.

Best regards,

Niels

Thanks, Niels. It does help, at least in the sense of providing comfort. But I still have a long way to go before I will be able to start using the Amiga for much of anything again. I currently use it to go to Hyperion forums, and to read my on line newspaper. Not long ago I was able to listen to some audio stuff on it (even though I could not get more than maybe 90 seconds per boot on the Linux side), but now I can't do that any more either. What you told me about AmigaAMP3 led to an interesting experiment. It will list certain things in my Songs directory, and pretend to play them without crashing the computer the way clicking on most of the song names directly does.
