Ubuntu as you found out doesn't allow a root log in. But unless you need to login as root on the desktop you don't need it. You can work around it by typing "sudo su root" in a terminal and then you are root. OSX has the same issue.

Can you give any details or are you under NDA?

How do you boot the DVD? Does it present a firmware menu? The install works like any live installer? How does it handle the special X1000 case of installing the kernel, modules and boot menu entry? Could my friends do it? Enquiring minds want to know!

The DVD as purchased at Amiwest came with a printout that shows how to boot the DVD on the X1000 and use it in live mode. Even a chimp like me was able to do it. The same printed document (is a .PDF on the Live DVD also) shows how to install. Even a chimp like me was able to install it. ah ah ah ee eee eee.
It is simple and well worth the $25 I spent for the DVD. Just copy the kernel to your CF Card and follow the install procedures and soon you will be running Ubuntu on the X1000.
I am a novice and did it with ease.
