If so, something went wrong in my install of update 6. The functionality is all there. It found several updates and downloaded/unpacked them for me. (I have it set to manual install.) But the tool menu item isn't there.

The new "Update Software" quick link is under "Workbench", the very first point

Thanks Raziel. I should be more curious and/or read more carefully before I post dumb questions.

Tools might actually be a more logical place for it, as it isn't *only* Workbench that the updates pertain to.

I purposely chose that location to be really obvious and to try to make software updates part of your regular routine.

Let's give this idea some soak time before nitpicking it to death. ;)

The good news is that it is really easy to move a menu item and any changes can be pushed out really quickly now.

On my search for a way to properly reproduce the problem i think i found a bug of some sort

Steps to reproduce:

1) Close AmiUpdate (make sure it is not just iconified)
...
2) Use the menu to "Update Software..." (for me AmiUpdate starts and the icon will be placed in AmiDock and do the initial search)
...
3) Now open up SYS:System/AmiUpdate/AmiUpdate (yes, a second time, but this time from it's icon on the HDD)
...
4) AmiUpdate will be spawned from it's docky icon (making it vanish from AmiDock) and show it's main window
...
5) Do nothing but iconifying AmiUpdate's window again

The docky icon reappears in AmiDock, but ... nothing can be done with it

- It won't show it's window on double-click
- The complete AmiDock menu which comes up on right clicking the docky icon won't do anything which it does when started once
(In fact AmiUpdate seems to be stuck)

6) Now use ...

6a) ...the menu "Update sofware..." and the window will be opened up again with the docky icon vanishing
This will trigger NO docky icon on iconifying!

6b) ...the HDD file (Sys:System/AmiUpdate/AmiUpdate) and the window will be opened up again with the docky icon vanishing
This WILL trigger the docky icon on iconifying!

After doing #5 all further AmiUpdate docky icons do not react proper again as described in #5, unless one closes AmiUpdate and restarts it.

I too had earlier a somehow "untidy" AmiUpdate setting. That would mean without AmiUpdate in its' own AmiUpdate drawer, so like several say here, the new place is now SYS:System/AmiUpdate (meaning AmiUpdate's own drawer with its' stuffs in it). I therefore realized that there had to be an AmiUpdate in SYS:System, so i did that and brought every parts of AmiUpdate into that drawer, made a backup of the SYS partition into Diverse:Backup (where i keep my backups) and checked again if AmiUpdate was acting correctly. Yes, it did :)

So yes, AmiUpdate's Installer does a marvellous job that way. Update 6 is really the solution to allow AmiUpdate to check for updates on every AmigaOS components between major updates. Very useful and very promising! I have to thank the Hyperion Entertainment team for this marvellous, unique update. :)

Not a dumb question. In Update Prefs you can opt for AmiUpdate to start iconified to the 'AppMenu' this shows AmiUpdate in the Workbench tools menu when it is iconified. This is useful if you have added to WBStartup or the Network Startup script.

I have found that if you have set AmiUpdate to iconify to AppMenu and AmiUpdate is not already running when you click "Update software..." in the Workbench menu it seems like nothing has happened unless there is an update (in which case the window pops up), this could be confusing and makes it seem as though "Update software..." isn't working as there's no feedback if no updates are found.

I might have a problem regarding AmiUpdate under AmigaOS 4.1.6. Even that i believe it has been successfully installed into SYS:System/AmiUpdate (own drawer for that), where all AmiUpdate's belongings are, now and then i get a message from the Notisfication that it cannot connect the update.amigaos.net server (password has been typed in during update 6 installation). It might happen for 1 or 2 minutes, then the connection to AmigaOS.net server appears correct itself. That's the only thing that happens.

Why does this happen? Is there some problems with the AmigaOS.net server sometimes, or is it undergoing some updates?

Just want to know. Would help a lot to know this. It's not really a problem after all, but would help if the AmigaOS.net server was more stable, perhaps?
