Of course it is. Perhaps I didn't express myself clearly. I was trying to say that his filesystem corruptions have been caused by the errors, probably drive or hardware errors.
I don't think so, i buy that hard disk recently and before installing update 5 I had no problem at all, also the main SYS partition (that was overwritten during the new installation) still work perfectly as before (no software error using programs from there), i got this error only on other partitions formatted with the old version of the filesystem, so it's for sure a software issue --> the new SFS 1.290 cause problems with partition created with SFS 1.289 .. atleast my current test/usage say that ..

Don't you think it is strange that you are the only one reporting problems with SFS v1.290 ? I have no problems here. Your recently formatted SYS is small & has not had a chance for errors to appear on it, where-as older or bigger partitions have.

As others say, your harddrive or it's cabling is faulty. You CAN get silent errors, if things are not working right. Bad blocks are not the only way things can die. Believe it or not, a harddrive is more likely to fail when it is young (or very old), than when it is middle-aged. Especially if it is a new model of harddrive, since it could be a firmware issue (sadly quite common on harddrives).

Not much, I have previous experience about bugreports that no one reported but was present.
Of course i can't be sure at 100% but i can't exclude too

I will tell you after a proper format ..

You are aware, I hope, that the only "proper format" of a modern hard drive is a quick format? Just making sure ...

Best regards,

Niels

If this is really the case - and I do believe you -, why does the OS provide two options, "Format" and "Quick Format"? If the latter is the only "proper" action, just one option simply called "Format" should be available.

That can of course happen.. but surely not with such a common set-up (most people have SFS partitions), especially after Update 5 has been out for so long? A hardware problem still seems more likely IMHO.

Oh, and a "full format" may temporarily hide the issue, thus proving nothing until you've used it for some time :-(

Mostly I think it is because nobody removed the superfluous options yet.

It is probably partly because it has not been deemed a higher priority than other work, and maybe also because you don't want to mess too much with such crucial tools as a Format command (if it ain't broke ...). But I'm just guessing.

Niels

Most OSes still include a "full format" option. I hope it won't be removed from OS4, because it can *potentially* be used to force a harddrive to "repair" bad blocks (actually just remap the bad block) rather than repeatedly try to read the bad block (very slowly!) each time it is read... although this may not work well on OS4 as I think it aborts on the first bad block it runs into.

There is an issue with the SFS. There are some consistent faults repeating itself.
I have a partition where I copy a lot of data, moves and deletes. It goes smooth and fast when partition has just been formatted, but when I have deleted a lot of files and copy new files again, the harddisk is working a lot without getting anything copied. It seems to me like it is searching or preparing the required space for the copy. I also thought it could be a HardDisk problem so I bought a new one, but the same thing happens again.
