Some exciting updates to Fienix Soar:
*Mate updated to 1.24.0
*LibreOffice updated to 6.4.1
*Many other updates
*New web browser - InterWeb - I highly recommend!

New games:
*BattleMech - Overhead mech shooter (press "b" key when in game to add bots for single player)
*Raptors - 3rd-person 3D game; defeat raptors and escape an overtaken military base
*Raptors Return - 3rd-person/raptor 3D game; this time play as a raptor and fight soldiers
*OpenNotrium - Open-source release of Notrium, an overhead survival adventure game
*Snowball - Jump and run puzzle game similar to Solomon's Key
*Whirling Blades - Isometric hack & slash game; see how long you can survive and how high you can get your score

Check out the updates and let me know if you run into any issues.

Thanks!

New Image for Fienix Soar!
*Bug fixes
*Utilizes NetworkManager, networking should be more stable and the Network Connections menu is now active
*InterWeb installed and pre-configured for YouTube playback
*New wallpaper packages
*Blue light reduction at night (easily disabled if you don't like it via notification area icon)
*Panel configuration adjustments

Download Here
This is the "Fienix Disk" partition only. You will need to set up a boot partition (or copy the image to a disk that already has a boot partition set up). Make sure to increase the partition size after copying it.

Hi Casey,

I was able to upgrade my installed Fienix on my X5000 today. I got the following error messages during the upgrade.

Code: Select all

E: /var/cache/apt/archives/mate-control-center-common_1.24.0-1_all.deb: trying to overwrite '/usr/share/man/man1/mate-time-admin.1.gz', which is also in package mate-system-tools 1.8.1+dfsg1-2
E: /var/cache/apt/archives/mate-control-center_1.24.0-1_powerpc.deb: trying to overwrite '/usr/bin/mate-time-admin', which is also in package mate-system-tools 1.8.1+dfsg1-2
I removed the package mate-system-tools 1.8.1+dfsg1-2 and after that I was able to install the packages mate-control-center_1.24.0-1 and mate-control-center-common_1.24.0-1.

The new wallpapers are really great! Thank you!

I wasn't able to find the Raptors, BattleMech, and OpenNotrium packages. I successfully installed Rafkill.

Hi casey
I managed to install a fresh copy of soar via your image. Thank you for your very hard work in putting it together, seems quite snappy. All runs fine except I cannot add a user or use sudo, nor can I run apt. Adduser seems to be installed but sudo does not appear to be in your repository. Any hints as to how to add a user and sudo?

Thanks

All these things work with the root account. I change to root with 'su' and after that I can use all these commands.

@Casey

Thanks. This will take a little getting used to. Is this the Debian way these days?

Yes, it's the Debian way. I am very satisfied with Fienix. My games are faster under Fienix. Faster than with ubuntu MATE 16.04. The new wallpapers are fantastic! Casey did a lot of work.

AFAIR, "su" has been the way of most Linuxen always.

The invention of "sudo" (or at least the first I heard about it) came with Ubuntu and similar - maybe an attempt to avoid getting users' hands "root-dirty" longer than necessary at a time?

Best regards,

Niels
