I can't find any error logs associated with this - any ideas?

Casey,

Great news! The MATE Terminal works with old Linux kernels (4.19 and lower) again! :-)

Hi Casey,

Arctic Fox 27.9.19, SpiderWeb 2.2.0, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth work without any problems on Fienix. :-)

Could you please add the following packages to the Fienix boot image?

*PulseAudio sound server to 13.0

*LibreOffice to 6.4.0
*Rawtherapee digital photo developer to 5.7
*Flowblade nonlinear video editor to 2.4
*Mopidy music client to 3.0.1
*smplayer media player to 19.10
*Many other updated packages

*Maxima algebra system
*Regina mathematical software
*OpenVPN VPN
*OpenConnect VPN
*LAMP Stack (Apache2, MySQL 5.7, and PHP 7.3)

Repository Update
Fienix is now using a new software repository. When I made the old repository, it was really just a place to store add-on packages, and it didn't scale very well when I decided to create a whole new distro. The new repository should help me keep it organized and updated much easier. When you upgrade "fienix-customization-layer" your sources.list will automatically update to the new repositories, you do not need to do anything else.

Repository Addresses (for reference - your sources.list will update automatically)
deb http://fienix.servehttp.com/repos/fienix/soar/ soar-di main
deb http://fienix.servehttp.com/repos/fienix/soar/ soar-dh main
deb http://fienix.servehttp.com/repos/fienix/soar/ soar-cp main

Sometimes the avahi daemon needs a lot of system resources. This slow down your system performance. If you don't need it and your system is slow then set the following lines to "no" in the file /etc/avahi/avahi-daemon.conf.

nano /etc/avahi/avahi-daemon.conf

Code: Select all

use-ipv4=no
use-ipv6=no
I don't need the avahi daemon so I set these lines to "no".

Hi Casey,

I was able to upgrade my installed Fienix on my X5000 today. I got the following error messages during the upgrade.

Code: Select all

E: /var/cache/apt/archives/mate-control-center-common_1.24.0-1_all.deb: trying to overwrite '/usr/share/man/man1/mate-time-admin.1.gz', which is also in package mate-system-tools 1.8.1+dfsg1-2
E: /var/cache/apt/archives/mate-control-center_1.24.0-1_powerpc.deb: trying to overwrite '/usr/bin/mate-time-admin', which is also in package mate-system-tools 1.8.1+dfsg1-2
I removed the package mate-system-tools 1.8.1+dfsg1-2 and after that I was able to install the packages mate-control-center_1.24.0-1 and mate-control-center-common_1.24.0-1.

The new wallpapers are really great! Thank you!

I wasn't able to find the Raptors, BattleMech, and OpenNotrium packages. I successfully installed Rafkill.

I additionally tested it on my X1000 successfully.

Hi All,

Casey has released a new version of Fienix Soar three days ago.

Download: fienix-soar_3.0-20200412.img

Fienix Release Video

I successfully upgraded Fienix Soar to version 3.0-20200412 on my X1000 and X5000/40 today.

There are AMD Radeon HD6970 (Cayman XT) graphics cards installed in both AmigaOnes so I can use hardware 3D acceleration with the new Fienix version.

Screenshot of Fienix Soar 3.0-20200412 on my AmigaOne X1000:

Unfortunately SpiderWeb from his repository doesn't work.

I installed SpiderWeb from the github site and this version works without any problems on the new Fienix Soar.
Skateman wrote: Mon Apr 13, 2020 8:40 pm The Welcome screen shows up... i can login as fienix...
After login the screen turns to black again... mouse pointer still visible and responsive
All is running, can switch to a different TTY and work without the GUI in fienix.
It has to be something with the display drivers..
Let me fiddle a bit more...

I found out that i can login as Root and get the "default" mate desktop!
So the issue is somewhere in the used Fienix theme..
I have the same issue in a virtual QEMU machine with a Virtio GPU. I can login as root and get the "default" MATE desktop as well.

@Casey
Thank you very much for this great update! :-)

Hi guys. Good to see ongoing work progressing. I installed and tried to boot Fienix but am stuck at login. It just won't accept user or login. Does the latest Fienix still use the same login? I got a terminal and it stopped for log in.

I wonder if it's due to how I installed it. I mounted the image and rsynced it across. But forgot to install the modules again lol. I usually do it the dd way but that tends to be looked down on. I would have preferred a disk imager that only writes what it needs but I couldn't find one one for my Ubuntu 12.04 LTS which is the newest working Linux I have. Though it would be packed down. In fact finding anything that can any do disk imaging on that distro is hard. Disks almost worked but won't copy to another partition. I didn't want delete one to make it work because I just don;t trust it on an Amiga disk. Debian partman has a bug where it damages Amiga partitions if you try to add one so I don;t trust anything else either.

Anyway, think I might try just using dd to install it again and put the modules on.

Yes, it does have the same default username and password.

I would recommend you to use "dd" instead of rsync. After that you can expand the file system with "resize2fs" to the total size of the partition.

Okay never mind. Decided to wipe it. Can't believe rsync was sitting there over an hour copying only what was needed. I did a dd with a BS of 16M and it was done in 2 minutes!

Then I put on the modules. And rebooted into it. It loaded up and kernel was booting. Butt then it stopped on a blinking cursor. Keyboard was dead, no response.

I booted it with kernel4.19. Could it be too old? Suspect I need to match version of X5000 modules inside.
