Re: Kernel 5.4

Hi All,

I released the RC5 of kernel 5.4 for the X1000 and X5000 today.

New:
Download: linux-image-5.4-rc5-X1000_X5000.tar.gz

BTW, I upgraded from a Radeon HD4870 to a HD6870 in my X5000/40 today. The HD6870 is a little bit faster but also a little bit louder. The interesting thing is, that the CPU temperature has decreased. With the HD4870 I had 80 degrees Celsius and with the HD6870 I have about 50 degrees Celsius CPU temperature. I think the Radeon HD4870 dissipated heat in the direction to the CPU.

Screenshot of the RC5 on a X5000/40 with a Radeon HD6870 (Barts XT):

Please test the kernels.

Thanks,
Christian

Hi All,

The RC7 of kernel 5.4 has been released for testing.

New:
Download: linux-image-5.4-rc7-X1000_X5000.tar.gz

Please note: There are problems with some PCI cards if you have more than 3.5G RAM in your X5000. If you have this problem please reduce the RAM with the boot argument "mem=3500M". The X1000 isn't affected. We created a bug report a month ago. Link to the bug report: Bug 205201 - Booting halts if Dawicontrol DC-2976 UW SCSI board installed, unless RAM size limited to 3500M

BTW, a new version of ViewTube with new settings is available.

Screenshot of Fienix PowerPC with the kernel 5.4-rc7 and with the new ViewTube:

Please test the kernels.

Thanks,
Christian

Hi All,

Here is the RC8 of kernel 5.4 for testing.

New:
Download: linux-image-5.4-rc8-X1000_X5000.tar.gz

@Roland
Please test the kernel with your Dawicontrol DC 2976 UW SCSI PCI board.

@All
Please test all kernels.

Thanks,
Christian

Hi Christian
tried kernel 5.4Rc8. With the linux-5.4 file I got this error "fat entries should be> = 2 ran off end of fat chain!" I had to restart the X1000.
the zimage-5.4 gave this error "i / o error". Then I gave up more attempts.

I think there is an issue with your CF card. Which size has your FAT partition on your CF card?

@musa

The CFcard is touchy. Even though it kind of looks like a hard drive it is not.
You can generally delete the last item put on there without problem, however deleting something in the middle tends to mess up the pointers to where other things are.

Also you should not use a journaling file system on the card as the OS may be writing hard drive stuff there that again should not be there. I have gone to using the ext2 file system ( -fs=ext2 ) and have had less trouble. I have also got into the habit of keeping all of the kernels I may want on the cfcard on a USB stick and re-formatting the cfcard if I want to delete something then copying the wanted kernels back to it.

It is a PITA.

hi Christian
it's a 4 giga cf card. I've reformatted it (fat) and put the files back on.
Now I can boot Feinix on kernel 5.1 and 5.3 but packed files (zimage) and kernel 5.4 give the same error again.
Could the files have been damaged during download

Could you please format your CF card and copy vmlinux-5.4 again?

Thanks
