Maybe you typed the incorrect partition device or you typed it in a wrong format in the installer.

The correct format is: /dev/<your partition>

For example: /dev/sdb2

Additionally, maybe you need to reformat your CF card.

Cheers,
Christian
In the installer the USB stick is being formatted with ext4 as primary partition. GParted is showing it as sdb1 and the files appear to be copied to the USB stick. Using /dev/sdb2 to boot just gives a device not found error. When I use /dev/sdb1 for booting from the USB stick it looks like it tries to start ubuntu but fails with the errors I listed above. When I try to boot from the hard disk partition (/dev/sda10) I get the same results.

Unless someone else tries the install and boot with the above listed files and instructions and succeeds, I'm giving up. I spent 2 days struggling to get it to work and whether the problem is me or the files/procedure, I've given it my best try. Thanks for you help though.

I installed ubuntu on sda10 on my hard-disk and on a USB stick with a single partition (sdb1).
Starting ubuntu from sda10 (hard disk partition) or sdb1 (USB stick) gets me the same results. If I specify the vmlinux-4.18 kernal from a USB stick, I get the kernal panic error suggesting I give the kernal a "init=". If I specify the vmlinux-4.19 kernal, I get an error stating that vmlinux-4.19 is not an ELF file.

Is /dev/sda10 empty? Could you please check it with the live DVD?

When I install ubuntu on sda10, hundreds of files scroll by in the terminal. When I open sda10 after installing, it shows up as empty. Maybe it really is empty. I had to create a blank sda10 with AmigaOS because GParted would not create a 10th partition. It's possible that I would need to reduce the number of partitions on my hard-disk before the ubuntu install will actually work. I've never installed a CF card on my X1000 either. I don't think I should waste any more of your time until I can get a backup drive large enough to back up my main drive and reorganize it.

What do you think about to install a second hard disk?

OK. I tried that. I discovered why GParted would not create a partition on a hard-disk for me. The default alignment in the partition window is Mi (or MiB ?) and trying to partition with that setting fails. I tried switching the alignment to "cylinder" and the partition worked. I mounted and opened the partition and there was only a hidden folder with no files. I started the alternate install script again and selected "Copy the files" (install) and then selected sdb3 (the partition that was created) as the destination. Hundreds of lines scrolled by in the Terminal window and it seemed like files were being copied. After the copy completed I opened the sdb3 partition and it was still empty except for an empty hidden folder.

It looks like the ubuntu files are not actually being installed (copied) and that's why starting ubuntu from my hard-disk doesn't work. I must be doing something wrong.

I would recommend you to install a new hard disk in your X1000 and create a big Linux ext4 partition with a LABEL (MBR partition table) on it.

LABEL = Name of the partition

LABEL = Name of the partition
In my last post I described attempting to install ubuntu on a second hard disk as partition sdb3. All the partitions I've created have been at least 100GB in size. I've also been labeling them. As far as I know an MBR partition table is a Windows partition table. The Ubuntu GParted 'partition table' menu has no MBR setting. It has a lot of 'partition table' options but I don't see MBR as one of the options.

Today I cleared all partitions from my second hard-disk, created a single ext4 partition with a label on the disk from Ubuntu GParted. When I used the alternative install script to install ubuntu (the script says copy), lots of files scrolled by in the Terminal window and the hard-drive LED was flickering. As before, when I checked the partition in ubuntu it showed as empty. Attempting to start Ubuntu from the new partition fails.

Have you done a fresh install of ubuntu from the Ubuntu DVD with the alternative install script lately? If you can get it to work and describe how you did it in detail, I may try to install it again. Otherwise, I'm giving up and will switch back to my X5000 if I need to use Linux. Thanks anyway.

@xeno74
Problem solved. After returning to the problem after a break, I discovered that I was making a typing error. I have Ubuntu installed of a hard-disk partition and it's working. Thanks for the patience and help.
