In the installer the USB stick is being formatted with ext4 as primary partition. GParted is showing it as sdb1 and the files appear to be copied to the USB stick. Using /dev/sdb2 to boot just gives a device not found error. When I use /dev/sdb1 for booting from the USB stick it looks like it tries to start ubuntu but fails with the errors I listed above. When I try to boot from the hard disk partition (/dev/sda10) I get the same results.xeno74 wrote:Hi Xenic,
Maybe you typed the incorrect partition device or you typed it in a wrong format in the installer.
The correct format is: /dev/<your partition>
For example: /dev/sdb2
Additionally, maybe you need to reformat your CF card.

Unless someone else tries the install and boot with the above listed files and instructions and succeeds, I'm giving up. I spent 2 days struggling to get it to work and whether the problem is me or the files/procedure, I've given it my best try. Thanks for you help though.
