Hi Casey,

I added MPlayer 1.3.0 20170413 svn37931 from the Debian Multimedia Repository to the MATE PowerPC Remix 2017 today. Unfortunately this MPlayer isn't as fast as mpv and VDPAU doesn't work on my X1000 but I will not remove the package because it works well on your X5000. Which packages did you install from the Debian Multimedia Repository on your X5000?

Cheers,
Christian

Hi Christian,
From deb-multimedia I installed mplayer 4:1.3.0~20170413.svn37931-dmo2 and its dependencies and ffmpeg and its dependencies (libavcodec57, libavdevice57, libavfilter6, libavformat57, libavresample3, libavutil55, libc6, libpostproc54, libsdl2-2.0-0, libswresample2, libswscale4, libav-tools)
In SMPlayer, in Preferences, under General, Video tab, you must select "gl (fast - ATI cards). Then you should also be able to check "Direct rendering", and under Performance, you should be able to select "vdpau" for Hardware decoding.

Firefox 47 displays correct colors. Video playback also seems to be much smoother even using the native YouTube video player.

No change with VLC, still doesn't work on X5000. I haven't tested MPlayer/mpv yet, but I will let you know how it goes. Please consider adding Kodi if possible.

This is really great, thanks for all the hard work you've put into this!

Hi Casey,

I added ViewTube 2017.03.08 to the MATE PowerPC Remix today. It works great! I can even watch 1080p YouTube videos. For Firefox 50.1, I had to create the directory plugins and I had to copy the libvlcplugin.so (browser-plugin-vlc) to this directory.

Code: Select all

cp /usr/lib/mozilla/plugins/libvlcplugin.so /home/amigaone/Apps/firefox-50.1.0-powerpc/plugins
It works with the correct colors. Unfortunately Firefox 52.0.2 doesn't support this plugin anymore. I know, the default VLC doesn't work on the X5000 but you could try the other options of ViewTube for example Xine, Totem, MPV, VTP, FLV, MPEG, MP4,HTML5, etc.

The same packages are installed on my MATE PowerPC Remix and I have the same preferences but unfortunately the MPlayer from the Debian Multimedia Repository is quite slow on my X1000.

Hi Christian,

Are you using Mesa 17.2? Could you compare mpv and mplayer using output driver "xv (0 - Radeon Textured Video)"?
I've compared many videos on my X5000, and mplayer works much better than mpv for me. Using mplayer I can play high resolution h264 video encoded at 3356 kbps perfectly, but with mpv they stutter with low fps.

I haven't tried ViewTube lately. Last time I tried it did not seem to help much but I will try again and let you know.

Also, I wanted to see if the deb-multimedia version of vlc would run on X5000; it does not.

Hi Casey,

Yes, I am using Mesa 17.2.0-devel (git-f466683). I will test the output driver "xv (0 - Radeon Textured Video)". I will let the MPlayer on the MATE PowerPC Remix because it works well on your X5000. The X5000 users can use MPlayer and the X1000 users can use MPV in the future. :-) Thank you for testing the deb-multimedia version of VLC on your X5000. I will let the VLC on the MATE PowerPC Remix 2017 for the X1000 users.

Thanks,
Christian

It stutters with low fps. Maybe I need the G4 version of MPlayer.

Download: mplayer-g4_1.3.0~20170413.svn37931-dmo2_powerpc.deb

I think the G4 version was compiled with AltiVec support so maybe it doesn't work on the X5000.

Thank you for your invaluable efforts, Christian !-)

One thing occurred to me... This package is already quite huge to be downloaded, even though it is packed (would take around 6 hours). Would it be possible to have also a 'lite' version of this Mate PPC Remix, including only the minimum of additional software...? And maybe have the extra software as a separate 'upgrade' packege?

My pleasure! :-) A lite version is a good idea. I have to think about it.

Hi Christian,
Tested 0.6 on X5000; it works well for the most part.
Firefox settings have to be changed to disable VLC plugin. Greasemonkey works with HTML5 or MPEG, but Firefox 52 still displays wrong colors for videos even when using Greasemonkey, probably because the VLC plugin is disabled.
Video playback on X5000 is again much better using mplayer compared to mpv.
Also, this isn't really a problem, but those with American English keyboards will need to change the keyboard layout from UK. I couldn't figure out why my symbols were all mixed up at first ;)
