I have bad news for you. Lubuntu 14.10 PPC wasn't released last week.

Note:

This bug doesn't affect our Sam440ep (Flex), Sam460ex (Lite), and AMIGA one X1000 computers. They haven't got this bug. The AMIGA one X1000 has even 3D acceleration with the unofficial Mesa package for Lubuntu 14.10 PowerPC (MesaLib-1.0.0.4-Lubuntu_14.10-powerpc-test.tar.bz2).

The AMIGA one X1000 is the only computer which supports Lubuntu 14.10 completely.

Hi, thought it was a good time to do kind of a summary of how-to-get to Lubuntu 14.10 Utopic in two different ways: 1 if you also experience the hard drive seek error during the newer installations, and 2 if you don't.

The first thing you need to do assuming you have a kernel on a USB or CF that boots the machine is to get an Initrd.gz image from here http://ports.ubuntu.com/dists/utopic/ma ... /initrd.gz => which is the 14.10 install image
or
http://ports.ubuntu.com/dists/saucy-pro ... /initrd.gz
Which is the final 13.10 image, in case you experience the error I mentiond during installation of newer net installations.

This Installation installs great using xeno74's guide here: http://forum.hyperion-entertainment.biz ... =35&t=2337 => which uses the initrd.gz image downloaded before and loaded to the CF or USB

Now, keep in mind that when I tested this I went from 13.10 to 14.04 to beta test 14.10 which was then in a beta state it is no longer in. This means that probably you can upgrade directly to the official Lubuntu 14.10.
In this process there was one hitch - when upgrading from 13.10 to 14.04 one of the official software sources on the Ubuntu servers didn't exist so if you experience something like that which prevents you from upgrading simply turn it off in software sources preferences utility - it will immediatelly be turned on after the upgrade and the needed files will be downloaded automatically via a normal system update.

After the upgrade it is time to replace some files in order of getting 3D to work and do so with the right colors - again, follow xeno74's guide (with a small addition by me):
A. Download this package from xeno74's site => http://www.xenosoft.de/MesaLib-1.0.0.4- ... st.tar.bz2
B. Open it and install in terminal => cd Downloads/*openeddirectory ; sudo dpkg -i libdrm-nouveau1a_2.4.52-1~precise1_powerpc.deb
C. Download this file to the same directory you extracted xeno74's files: https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/me ... owerpc.deb
D: Install in Terminal (making sure you are again in the same directory) => sudo dpkg -i libgl1-mesa-dri_10.1.3-0ubuntu0.2_powerpc.deb
E. Copy the folder mesa-10.0.4 as root to the directory /usr/local/ (making sure you are "in" the directory that is the one which includes the actual directory you need to copy) => sudo cp -R mesa-10.0.4 /usr/local/
F. After you reboot => export LD_LIBRARY_PATH=/usr/local/mesa-10.0.4/lib/
G. Write "glxgears" in terminal to see if it works.
H. Add a line to the file which resides in your profile directory that is the parent directory of "downloads", and is also, how convenient, named ".profile" => export LD_LIBRARY_PATH=/usr/local/mesa-10.0.4/lib/
I. Keep in mind that the backwards compatible libgl1-dri_10.1.3 file presents you with a dependancy error every time you wish to update or upgrade so work with the auto-upgrade offered by the system (synaptic, Ubuntu store, etc) to bring your file to the latest version and then run in terminal to get the 3D working again => sudo dpkg -i libgl1-mesa-dri_10.1.3-0ubuntu0.2_powerpc.deb (the message about downgrading means it is working).

You now have a supposedlly working Lubuntu 14.10 system which I highly recommend upgrading to: it gives you a significant boost to video performance at around 40% and makes browsing with Firefox easier as it provides (with added scripts) a fuller experience.

Now, you can also get Compiz, the compositing effects software to work normally, just not at login. In order to do that you need two things installed: Cairo-dock which is a dock app and Metacity which is a window decorator that works with Compiz, as the default (and inferior) Openbox windows decorator isn't compatible. You can later also install the gnome tweak utilty to customize Metacity.
Then, it is simply a matter of adding Metacity as the window manager in the start menu of the LXsession customizer, adding "cairo-dock" in the same place as the default dock, and adding Compiz as the no. 1 priority compositor inside the Cairo-dock app, and finally launching it via reloading of the window manager (right click on the cairo bar's relevent icon). If you get cairo to start at login then it is simply a one right click issue.

* On my X1000 the combined "hit" of Cairo-dock, Compiz and Screenlets with everything else that is loaded at startup is between 18%-27% complete load so you can still pretty much do everything while those addons are active.

I especially want to focus on the second pic as I've forgotten something important: look at what is marked with an arrow in the bottom of the screen it is an important setting in VLC to get the smoothest playback. Normally the default selection gives you lackluster results if you even can get the video to play. When it is set to VA-API DRM everything works as it should even with the composite+cairo effects. I have trouble getting the default Mplayer to work in this Lubuntu version so VLC becomes very important in normal playback of videos and in video streaming with the Viewtube script (http://isebaro.com/viewtube/?ln=en) even though you can still use the latest Minitube which does use Mplayer with DirectFB so maybe its is an Mplayer OGL issue.
