Hard drive dead?

Hi all,

As I mentioned in a previous post, I've been migrating from PATA to SATA. I Installed a 3114 card, updated to uBoot 1.1.4 so I could boot off it. My A1 had been running fine for two weeks on this setup with only 1 small detail missing: the 3114's activity LED Jumpers are at the opposite end of the card and the cable in my case no longer reached.

So today I got hold of some extention cables, plugged them in and finally saw the HD's activity.

Minutes later I got a crash while writing to the drive (encoding a video with ffmpeg). Upon reboot, uBoot couldn't see the Hard drive anymore.

I booted off CD, And no drive icons appeared. The LED Was solid red; thinking it might be causing the problem I powered off and unplugged the extension. On reboot, uBoot could now see my drive, but couldn't boot from it.



I booted off CD again and this time I saw drive icons, but opening them is incredibly slow.

All partitions were SFS/02, except a swap partition. At the moment, I'm leaving it switched on doing nothing, hopefully the drive is rebuilding itself (as my old ide drive needed to do sometimes) but I can't hear any noises and it has been on for several hours now.

Have I paid the price for using uBoot 1.1.4? Have I managed to kill a hard drive after only 3 months (NEVER Buying Western Digital again).

Weird. I opened up the machine today, checked connections, and removed and reseated the PCI card. The drive has booted fine.

Still uncertain about it, so I think I'll get a new one this weekend and recopy my data across.

You might just have caused a bad connection somehow or have a bad sata cable, they don't like getting bent more than once, much like telescopic antennas

Also try to use the SATA cables with the little clip on them - the clip holds the connector straight in the socket.

The cheaper SATA cables can work their way out of the socket, especially if there is some force on the cable due to cramped space.

i had a similar problem after a write crash.
It corrupted the amigaboot.of, after recopying it from the 4.1 CD it did start up again fine

Check the md5sum of your installed and off-the-CD amigaboot.of to see if there are differences (or just recopy it right away)

It might not be what's causing your problems but it's worth a shot

Amigaboot.of is specific to the X1000/Nemo board.
If your AmigaOne is an XE or Micro, you have no need for it.

A word about that image:
The first time I clicked on it, it displayed with a small advertisement for a wind farm blocking the middle of the picture.
Clicking the close gadget on that immediately opened a full page website of questionable integrity.

Fortunately I am not at work, nor in front of any of the grandkids today, but if you're thinkging of looking at the last picture posted, be warned.. Some rather adventurous advertising might catch you by surprise.

I didn't get that "questionable image" but i'm sure you were stomped by a spam referrer.

If i might give you a hint...install this hostfile from this page (I know it's windows but bear with me)
It's a real great little cheat to get rid of all the spam sites, pictures, refererrers and surf even faster.

Easy to do too, simply copy the downloaded "hosts.txt" to "DEVS:Internet/HOSTS" (make a backup first, of course)
reboot and start your browser, you will see a lot of broken pictures on formerly spammed sites (those are the spam sites trying to annoy you)

Due to the size of the hosts file the internet preferences program will take some time to load up but it will eventually.
I'm using this hosts file since four or five years now and it never let me down (it gets updated from time to time aswell)

Had the same problem again last night

Do you have an XE or X1000?

That picture definitely shows a broken or missing Kickstart/JXFileSystem module

Recopy that file from the CD and try again

A1-XE (hence postings in the A1-XE forum).

I tried replacing that file, still won't boot. Now, it's not even getting to the SLB.

I can boot off CD, And all the drive partitions mount.

I'm going to pick up another drive today and install it over the weekend.
