Do PCIe Serial Port cards work in X1000 ?

( I thought there was a list.......... somewhere(?) ) :?

I doubt anyone has tried. The standard solution is to use one of these:

http://amigakit.leamancomputing.com/cat ... ts_id=1062

It connects easily to a header on the motherboard and provides a serial port, which is supported by an OS4 driver.

There's a cutout in the standard Fractal case, where you can punch out a blind-plate and - with a little work and a couple of sufficiently large washers - fix the socket for easy connection. I did so here, works fine. But you can surely also get away with just leaving it hanging somewhere.

Thanks Niels, but I was looking to install 1 or 2 additional serial ports.

Ah, I see.

Well, as I said, I don't think anyone has tried, and I also doubt it will work, as I'd expect a dedicated driver for such a card over PCI(e) would have to be written, and I have never heard of such a beast for OS4.

But if you can get your hands on such a card, you should try it and let us know ;-). It should be quite safe to install it, the worst thing that could happen is that you can't boot for some reason (unlikely), which should be recoverable by removing the card again. (Of course, no guarantees, YMMV, etc. etc.)

Best regards,

Niels

Hm,,,,,well, the SB600 does I/O and that is connected to PCI(e).

I'll pick one up...... soon, and give it a go. :)

Like the SAM, the X1000 serial port is not a "real" serial port. I only has 2 lines and ground. It won't work with devices that need hardware hand-shaking (like most serial modems). If you want a "real" serial port then a card is probably a good idea if you can find one that works with the A1000.

Okay, its been awhile.

I have installed a Startech 16950 2 port serial card in X1000. ( Link Below)
Ranger sees the card and recognizes it has 4 serial ports and 1 parallel port.

To test this card with Linux (arrrgg) I had to rebuild the 357 kernel with support for 4 serial ports
as the max was set to 2.

I installed GtkTerm on Mint and the same on my x86 box Linux. IT WORKS!
I also tested an old Modem and that also works.

Now the question is, can anybody help me get this thing working with AmigaOS?

My fault sorry, I'd set it to 2 as there are only two serial ports on the PA6T processor. Didn't expect anyone to add some more.

tonyw is the person to speak to, he created the new serial device, and IIUC all that would be needed is the ID of your card to be added to this for it to work. Drop him a pm.

No problemo. I'll be posting a little more 357 info in the Linux section soon, and I'll contact
tonyw , unless he shows up here first.

Thanks
