Best graphics card (AGP) for my G4 AmigaOne XE

Post by Mika »

Hi,

I've read on various Amiga pages, to appear that the 4.1.3 update!

Now I wanted to ask what all the best graphics card (AGP) for my G4 AmigaOne XE (1.266 Ghz) is! An accurate description would not be bad, so I can find on the internet the right!

At the moment I only have a Radeon 9200 (AGP) 128 MB with 2 VGA outputs installed.

Yours sincerely,

AFAIK the best fully supported Radeon AGP card for A1/Peg2 mobo was Radeon9000pro card...
the best R200 chip was the one mounted on Radeon9100 cards but that was supported only in 2D and not fully...
Seems that also Raedon9800 was supported in 2D side but not in 3D...

So, unfortunately if noone will support the Radeon 9800(the best electrically supported AGP card in A1/Peg2), we can only use Radeon 9000pro...

You can only use a PCI RadeonHD card to have a better card not an AGP...but ATM no 3D(aka Gallium3D) was available so you have to stay on Radeon9000pro for the better or take your 9200 and wait for Gallium or something else...

For the Peg2 users unfortunately since no PCI cards seems to be supported(due to a Peg2 firmware issue), you can use only Raedon9000pro as better choiche...

Hope that helps.

There's quite a good discussion about the *best* graphics cards for the Peg 2, here:
http://www.morphzone.org/modules/newbb_ ... 7&forum=11

***Important, contains information about M*rphOS, if this offends you, please do not click on that link***

Also I don't think the 8500 works fully in 4.1 :(
Near at hand is your forgetting all; near, too, all forgetting you.

Could you the exact dates of your graphics card (9800PRO) indicate?

Then I would find it easier to one of the same type!

As has been mentioned before if you intend to use 3D the 9000pro is the best choice. if your 9200 has 128 bit memory bus the performance gain won't be massive.

If are serious about a 9800 here are some points to consider:
Bad points:
No compositing - Turn off compositing in GUI prefs or WB will use software emulation (Verrry slow!!)
No 3D (warp3d or Mingl) - Current info indicates this may never arrive.

Good points:
2D accelleration is very good, and seems to be complete.
Directly supported by ATIRadeon.chip - you can switch between your 9200 and a 9800 without any software changes needed.

If you are intent on buying a 9800 then you need to look for a 9800, 9800SE or preferably a 9800 pro and NOT a 9800XT

But it is not as simple as that, there are 2 chips used in the 9800 - the R350 and R360. The R350 is AGP 2x (Amigaone compatable) and the R360 (4x/8x only) which was used on the XT model.

These chips have the same pinout so some 9800pros have the R360 core on. You will need to check carefully, plugging a AGP4x card into your A1 probably won't damage it, but will most likely destroy the card.

Whichever way you decide to go, there is a German company called CM3-Computer that advertise on ebay and amazon that has a number of cards you could choose from (9000/9200/9800)

I have tested some GFX cards in the last years, from Ati Radeon 7000 to 9500 pro.
I think the best card is the Ati Radeon 9000 (pro) for use with 2d and 3d.

At the moment i use the ati Radeon 9000 Pro in my Aone XE G4, it reached round 1500 points with gfxbench2d.
My Pegasos II runs with ati Readon 9000, it reached round 1600 Points.

I have tested some 92x0 cards, with 128 MB and 256 MB, they was between 800 and 1100 Points.

The 9000 series are felt faster than 92x0 cards. You can test it with gfxbench2d.
