PlayCD.

Post by acmn »

PlayCD is not working in my AO500. It opens ok and plays the track but there is
no sound. I've had this problem from the very beginning and and there is
still no remedy after update 5. And the sound, if ever heard from any other
sources, is corrupted...MK

In PlayCD tooltypes, try to enable "USEAHI" tooltype.

Thank you, Petrol. I should have studied the icon information of PlayCD
more carefully. But what about the sound, why is it corrupted?
The version numbers of my audio files are:

Devs:DOSDrivers/AUDIO 1.0
Devs:ahi.device 6.6
Devs:audio.device 53.2
Devs:AHI/sm502.audio 6.3 (12.5.12)
Devs:AudioModes/SM502 not available
L:AHI-Handler 6.2
Prefs/AHI 6.2

I have the same problem with the sound. I believe It is a driver problem. I can only hope for an update to the SM502 driver but it is not written by Hyperion unfortunately.

I have tried using a PCI express sound card. OS4 sees the card but I never get any sound, and in some cases workbench becomes unresponsive. I have tried an Envy24 sound card on PCI-E as well as a PCI-E to PCI bridge card adapter with no luck. Ranger sees the card, and AHI shows it in the list if the driver is in Devs, but I have a feeling that AHI doesn't like PCI-E to PCI bridge chips. This, of course, is all speculation and the result of trying everything I could think of to get good sound.

Odd. Seems to me that some AmigaOne 500 owners have reported
that the sound is ok...MK

Can you describe the corruption?

Clicks?

Drop-outs (missing bits) ?

Distortion?

The sound is distorted, cracked, I would say.

Hi, I took the liberty of capturing the output from the Amigaone 500's SM502 chip using the very latest SM502 sound driver and mixer, configured exactly as stated in the instructions for the new driver. Here is a download link to the .wav file I created. The song is pretty easily identifiable, and the distortion present should be immediately apparent.

Thanks,

Periodic gaps in the audio is how I would describe it. I cannot say if the gaps mean missing bits, or just that the audio segments aren't played back smoothly. Regardless, there is a small gap in the audio about once every second. IIRC, it used to be worse with an older version of the driver.

@Hans:

That sounds like what I hear when I play CDs through PlayCD and AHI on the 460. I've already written a BZ (#7989) about it.
cheers
