Radeon HD 6450

Post by Gregor »

I am looking for a basic, low-consumption radeon card suitable for Linux, and have found a dealer which has a pile of seconnd-hand HD 6450s with 512MB GDDR5 memory. Is this 512MB enough for ordinary use, and does the GDDR5 memory generally work without issues? What video resolution is possible with 512MB, 720p or even 1080p...?

They have also a HD 6870 with 1GB GDDR5 (two slot model), but I suppose that card eats more power and generates much more heat and noise than a 6450?

I would recommend you to use this card because the hardware 3D acceleration is very good with the HD6870 on Linux PowerPC. It works without any problems in my X1000 and X5000.

Thank you for your recommendation! Can you tell how much power that card consumes, and how well is it regulated under PPC Linux?

I am sorry I can't tell you how much power this card consumes because I use the HD6970 in my X5000 currently.

I found out that also the HD 6870 is quite a 'powerhog'... Thus, not my piece of cake. HD 6450 or 6570 are more in the scale I would need.

I noticed that also the HD 7000 series has models (7450 and 7570) which have identical specs and the same GPU (Caicos/Turcs) as the 6450 and 6570. Do they work with PPC Linuxes just like their counterparts in HD 6000 series? Sounds to me they are just relabelled products... Also R5 230 has identical specs to HD 6450.

Some radeon HD cards have instead of HDMI the DP (DisplayPort). Is that port working with PPC Linuxes? Can you get also sound with DP if just the monitor has support for it?

I think yes but I haven’t tested them yet.

Sorry, I haven’t tested DP with my AmigaOnes yet.
