Please test the rb15.
Download: uImage-rb15
rb15 showed the issue at the first attempt! "git bisect bad"

I'm afraid we have now a problem... I got the idea to test Kernel 5.9 with the same test setup I have used since rb4 (downloading a video with Youtube-dl and running simultaneously a video from disk in VLC). There appeared now with 5.9 the same type of freeze (with slight distortion of VLC windows and sometimes also a sound problem) as I have got with rbs since rb4!

My guess is that there are in fact two different 'problems' (which may still be related in some way), and the test setup I used starting from sb4 is revealing a different issue than what we were initially tracking from 4.10.

Sigh...

Please test the rb1, rb2, rb3, and rb4 again. I would like to know if the results are the same with this second test.

Thanks

Ok... Let's do first some definitions so that we both know what we are talking about:

Problem type 1 The 'original' issue we started to track, which appeared in 4.10, with clearly visible and advancing display corruption but not usually with an immediate crash. Can appear with different programs but video streaming is so far the best way to get it.

Problem type 2 The issue which appears when running a video in VLC and downloading with Youtube-dl to HD simultaneously. Typical symptoms are a) Youtube download ceases (usually after 1,2 GB has been received), b) video in VLC stops running and slight corruption of toolbar section of VLC appears and c) total stop or repeating a sequence of sound, and d ) freezing of mouse and keyboard.

Today's results:
With rb 1 I got the 'type 2' issue with first try.

With rb2 I got the 'type 1' issue with first try, almost immediately after I had got the both programs running.

With rb3 I got the 'type 2' issue with first try.

With rb4 I did not yet get the issue visible (three tries), but when I tested rb4 originally with the new test arrangement I got the 'type 2' twice and 'type 1' once.

At least the results with rb 1-3 are consistent with my original tests, as also then only rb2 showed the 'type1' issue.

What would you like to do next? I will help with bisecting and compiling as good as I can.
Maybe it is a hardware issue because you are the only one with these issues.

I have an idea ....

Please try the rb16 without PREEMPT support (CONFIG_PREEMPT_NONE=y).

Download: uImage-rb16

Thanks

Ok, thanks :) I have to rethink this matter... The 'type 2' issue is present only in such a special situation that there is no idea waste time for it, especially if it originates from very old kernel generation. The other issue is more general and disturbing but it will take time to locate it.
Maybe it is a hardware issue because you are the only one with these issues.
I would bet the problem is related to the SCSI controller I have in this machine (Dawicontrol DC-2976 UW SCSI controller, PCI), or it's driver in kernel. Is there any variables which can be set for that driver when compiling a kernel...?

Roland,

Have you tried the rb16 yet? (see above)

Thanks,

I tested it now... I saw a 'type 2' issue but in a peculiar format... It started to manifest itself almost immediately but did not hang the machine permanently. The video running in VLC altered continuously between a black screen, normally running video and stopped video 'stuttering' peculiarly... Sound worked all time normally.

Around the terminal window running Youtube-dl there appeared a black shadow which disppeared and reappeared regularly. Even if I interrupted the Youtube-dl and closed the terminal, the disturbances in the video did not cease.

Very strange spectacle, I would say...! If you can explain how all those disturbances were created, please do it ;-).

I tested also to run a video stream from net in VLC (without Youtube-dl at backround) during an hour but did not see any issues.
