A new way to run Fienix (WIP)

Hi everyone,

In the past we had a live DVD for the X1000, for which we managed to simplify the install/booting, I've tried Fienix, and found it works well, but install/booting instructions are way more complicated than I like, so I've been trying to simplify things. I've now got something that some of you can test for me.

You'll need : an X5000 (/20 or /40) and a USB disk of 4G +

Downloadhttps://drive.google.com/file/d/1RghfKW ... sp=sharing

Unpack it to the root of the USB disk. (The disk doesn't need to be empty, but it helps)

To Boot:
Press a key once the bios anim starts, and select command line.

enter:
usb reset

when this has finished, enter
load usb 0 2000000 bootusb

the '0' may need to be changed, it will depend on how many usb disks you have attached. *DO NOT CHANGE THE 2000000!*

For X5000/20 enter
bootm 2000000

for X5000/40 enter
bootm 2000000#conf@2

A few minutes later a fienix boot screen will appear. I've used the same password for the fieniix user user as Casey does, and I've installed sudo.

Know issues:
The backdrop doesn't load. (Well it does when you boot as root.)
There is no persistant storage yet, the live-tools do support this, I will investigate soon
I've not created an easy install yet, should be just unpacking the root filesystem to media on the host machine - to be investigated.

Once we've confirmed this works for most people we can adjust what is installed.

Note:
This also boots on an X1000, (use zImage and initrd.gz) - the file x1kfienix is a script that contains the boot commands, but I had a lot of trouble with USB disks on my X1k, I couldn't get the script to run at all from USB, and often the kernel wouldn't load either.

Hi Darren,

I can confirm that your Fienix Live procedure as mentioned is working.
I have downloaded and extracted the files to a USB stick.
Booted, an Fienix Live is up and running.

My Onboard Ethernet adapter is not working in this version but does work in my on HDD installed Fienix version.

Well, I succeeded in getting and unpacking the archive and write the unpacked files to a USB stick.

But I didn't get far when trying to use it on my X5000/40.

Entering "usb reset" into the UBoot command line gave me a crash.

Could you please test it with another USB stick again? I have also issues with some USB sticks.

Found an older stick, an 8 GB Gigaware. Same result.

The first one I tried was a new 256 GB SanDisk UltraFit.

But what I find interesting is that the dump after the usb reset command starts by saying:

resetting USB...
USB not stopped: usbkbd still using USB

It sounds more like the USB system in UBoot is getting confused about the keyboard driver being there?

Did you also see that with the sticks you had problems with, Christian?
