Could you please add Debian’s new Mesa packages to the Fienix repository?

Thanks,

Hi Christian,
Yep, I'm staging updates to release this weekend including Mesa, Arctic Fox, SpiderWeb, and some others. I'll post a message here when it happens.
If you have the time, could you test my Debian PPC64 image on your P5020/40 system and add to the report?

There are too many problems with Debian PPC64 currently. It is not worth to invest in Debian PPC64 currently. Fienix works better.

Additionally I don’t have any partitions free for Debian PPC64. We should stick to Fienix/Debian PPC 32-bit. Fienix/Debian PPC 32-bit works better and is better supported. What do you think?

Hi Casey,

I successfully installed the new Mesa 19.3.1-3 from the Debian PPC repository today. I had to install the following packages with export PATH=$PATH:/sbin:/usr/sbin and dpkg -i *:
glxinfo | grep -i opengl

Code: Select all

OpenGL vendor string: X.Org
OpenGL renderer string: AMD CAYMAN (DRM 2.50.0 / 5.5.0-rc3_A-EON_X5000-00385-gb8e382a185eb-dirty, LLVM 9.0.0)
OpenGL core profile version string: 3.2 (Core Profile) Mesa 19.3.1
OpenGL core profile shading language version string: 1.50
OpenGL core profile context flags: (none)
OpenGL core profile profile mask: core profile
OpenGL core profile extensions:
OpenGL version string: 3.1 Mesa 19.3.1
OpenGL shading language version string: 1.40
OpenGL context flags: (none)
OpenGL extensions:
OpenGL ES profile version string: OpenGL ES 2.0 Mesa 19.3.1
OpenGL ES profile shading language version string: OpenGL ES GLSL ES 1.0.16
OpenGL ES profile extensions:
Mesa 19.3.1-3 works but after a restart Xorg doesn't work anymore! :-( Casey please don't upgrade your repository!

Cheers,
Christian

I had to remove the packages with the following commands:

Code: Select all

dpkg -r --force-all libgl1-mesa-dri
dpkg -r --force-all libgl1-mesa-glx
dpkg -r --force-all libglx-mesa0
dpkg -r --force-all llvm-9-runtime
dpkg -r --force-all libllvm9
dpkg -r --force-all libz3-4
dpkg -r --force-all binfmt-support
dpkg -r --force-all libdrm-amdgpu1
dpkg -r --force-all libdrm-radeon1
dpkg -r --force-all libglapi-mesa
After that I installed the old Mesa from the Fienix repository again.

Code: Select all

dhclient enP4096p4s4
apt-get update
apt --fix-broken install
After a restart Xorg works again.

I haven't been using Fienix as much as I would like, for a number of reasons. Two problems may stem from late September when I was having problems getting wi-fi set up.
One of those problems is in fact wi-fi. Fienix detects wi-fi fine but won't connect. A related symptom shows in this screen dump.
Screenshot.png
Instead of the usual internet icon in the upper right panel, I now have two icons, sort of rectangles. The one on the right has internets speed as kb/s by it. Clicking on it shows only the enP4096p4s4: 192... stuff and in: and out: speeds.
Clicking on the one on the left brings up

Code: Select all

Ethernet Network
    device not managed
Wi-Fi Networks
    disconnected
             Available
with a varying list that always includes the one I want to connect to, but clicking on it only changes the panel icon to the circling-comet thing for a while and no connection.

I remember mentioning this other problem that may stem from the same time but I don't remember where or when. Whenever I boot Fienix there is a point along the way where it stops with "A start job is running for Raise network interfaces." It is usually done in one minute eleven seconds or so, so not a great problem but I bring it up again in case it might be a clue to the first problem above.

Search engines give hints about how to fix this start job thing, but not in language I understand. Mostly directed at PC or Mac users.

Hi Christian,
Were you able to determine what is causing this issue for you? I am able to restart without issue with Mesa 19.3.1 and kernel 5.5. You can see in the images below by the run-time and clock I've restarted without issue:

I've created a new Fienix boot image that includes new updates. Please test it before I update the repo. You will need to set up a separate boot partition with kernel 5.5 and the dtb.

Hi Casey,

Happy New Year and many thanks for the new Fienix 2020-01 image! :-) I successfully tested it with the RC4 of kernel 5.5 on my X1000 and X5000/40 today. The good news is, that Xorg works without any problems! :-) I think my idea with only updating Mesa wasn't a good idea.

The hardware 3D acceleration works great with the new Mesa 19.3.1/LLVM 9.0.0 and with my Radeon HD6970 (Cayman XT). I tested it with SuperTuxKart, Quake-HD-Redux and with Yamagi Quake2.

I have found some small issues. The automatic network configuration doesn't work. I always had to manually configure my network cards with "dhclient" after the start of Fienix. I was able to solve this issue with installing the package "network-manager-gnome". Before I had to remove the package "rdnssd" because it isn't possible to install the package "network-manager-gnome" if the package "rdnssd" is installed.

The second issue isn't really a Fienix issue. The automatic configuration of my analog TV card Typhoon TView RDS + FM Stereo (BT878 chip) doesn't work. I had to set card=53 for the bttv kernel module.

Code: Select all

# rmmod bttv

Code: Select all

# modprobe bttv card=53
After that it works without any problems.

If you add the following line to /etc/modprobe.d/tv_bttv.conf then you don't need the commands above.

# nano /etc/modprobe.d/tv_bttv.conf

Code: Select all

options bttv card=53
I wasn't able to install the package "blueman" for using my Bluetooth devices. Error message:

Code: Select all

blueman:
Depends: gir1.2-nm-1.0 but it is not installable

Casey, Fienix is the best and most modern distribution we have currently! The games work faster with Fienix as with ubuntu MATE! Many thanks for your work! :-)

@All
Just for info for this image:

username: fienix
password: fienixPW
root password: rootAdminPW

Please test this image.

Thanks,

I can't find any error logs associated with this - any ideas?

Casey,

Great news! The MATE Terminal works with old Linux kernels (4.19 and lower) again! :-)
