After removing some packages which I were useless for me, I also run 'sudo apt-get autoremove' which relased over 500 MB disk space!

The nasty side effect of this 'autoremove' was that I also lost 'sudo', do not understand why...:-( How could I get it back? 'Synaptic' and 'apt-get' cannot find it. Is it part of some other package?

As I noticed some other similar problems after 'autoremove', I decided to go back to a recent backup partition of Fienix.

But is there a safer way to do what 'sudo apt-get autoremove' does? Obviously it removes some packages which are not obsolate but still in use in Fienix!
This tells me that the package "sudo" is marked as "automatically installed" on your system. You probably just need to mark it as "manually installed" in Synaptic before performing auto-remove.

Thanks for the tip! I tested it with sudo and one other still needed package, and they were indeed dropped from the list 'auto-remove' collects. I did not yet let it to really do the removal, as there were also some other problems in my earlier trial. Like some of the icons in 'Control center' dissappeared. There are a quite a lot of files on the removal list, so how to recognize those which should not be removed...?! It is quite impossible to do it by 'trial-and-error' method.

Fortunately, I also found another way, even more effective, to free disk space (>3 GB in my case!): "sudo apt-get clean". As far as I understand, it only cleans the 'buffer' of downloaded packages, so it is a 100% safe way. With "sudo du -sh /var/cache/apt" you can first check how much disk space the cache is occupying.

Desparate to get back into Fienix and suspecting that the troubles I was having with my current install stemmed from some contamination of files therein, I reformatted my REMIX partition and copied the new 2020 image into it.

I hoped that the new install might cure that annoying one minute 14 seconds of running a start job, but no, there it was again. And when it finished booting, there I was with the black screen and text cursor in the upper left corner again.

This time I just let it sit awhile, and suddenly there was the old mottled screen. I tried my old "fix" of entering (invisibly) "fienix." Back to the black screen, and waiting did no good this time.

While rebooting, I went ahead and made a new boot script, "fienixnew," copying my ubuntu script but changing /dev/sda7 to /dev/sda6. That leaves the kernel still set at Kernel Linux 5.5.0-rc1_A-EON_X5000 ppc64. It of course still fails.

The mottled screen currently comes up with that odd pattern in the upper left corner that the old install had when it quit working, see screen dump.

I just checked user.log which has worrisome messages I haven't seen before. Any clues there?

Syslog has a few thousand complaints of its own. Messages too.
I am out of ideas.

Going through the "auto-removable" list and selecting the packages you want to keep might be the only option if you want to perform an "auto-clean". I'm not sure why/how your packages would have been changed to automatic. If you need to free more disk space, I suggest running BleachBit as root. Bleachbit will let you remove temp files, logs, etc. that may have collected on your disk.

Hmm... I'm not sure tbh, but I have some ideas that I'll work into a new image.

Thanks for the tip! BleachBit freed about 100MB of disk space.

My Fienix installation originates from the very first disk image published, so it may well have 'collected' some problems during time. But compared to other distros it has been the most problem-free!

Having again plenty of free space, I run all the updates currently available. Only three of them were not installable, due to dependecy problems:

mate-system-monitor
qt5-gtk-platformtheme
supertuxcart

They should be installable.
Check your repos, do you have all three of the following?

Code: Select all

deb http://fienix.servehttp.com/repos/fienix/soar/ soar-di main
deb http://fienix.servehttp.com/repos/fienix/soar/ soar-dh main
deb http://fienix.servehttp.com/repos/fienix/soar/ soar-cp main
Is it possible you have packages installed from another distro (Debian for example)?

For mate-system-monitor:
Try clicking on the package in Synaptic, go to the Package menu and choose Force Version. Make sure you have the Fienix/Soar version installed.
Try using Force Version on mate-system-monitor-common to ensure you have the Fienix/Soar version installed.

For supertuxkart:
Make sure you don't have supertuxkart-data installed (this is a Debian package).

For qt5-gtk-platformtheme:
This has been removed from Fienix because it doesn't support the default Fienix theme. It may conflict with another package.

I have currently those three repos, and earlier had the two ppcutopia repos which were there originally. I have not used any others...

It did not have any effect... If I after that try to selct it for installation, I get this error message:

Depends: mate-system-monitor-common (>=1.22.2-1) but 1.22.1-2fienix is to be installed
For supertuxkart:
Make sure you don't have supertuxkart-data installed (this is a Debian package).
I checked that I do not have anything else installed than the supertuxkart itself.
For qt5-gtk-platformtheme:
This has been removed from Fienix because it doesn't support the default Fienix theme. It may conflict with another package.
Ok, I removed it.

Not that it makes any difference as long as I cannot log on to Fienix. But why would the new Fienix have what looks like an old list?
