Codec not supported:
VLC could not decode the format "h264" (H264 - MPEG-4 AVC (part 10))

Is there a way to get the h264 to work also with Fienix and MintPPC?
Hi Roland,

Please try VLC 3.0.12 without the included FFmpeg 4.3.1 on Fienix and MintPPC. This version uses the installed FFmpeg. I tested VLC 3.0.12 for the RC5 of kernel 5.12 on Fienix and MintPPC on Monday this week. I use the latest Mesa version on both distributions. The only thing I noticed was, that the file open dialog box doesn't work anymore with VLC 3.0.12 and 3.0.11.1 on MintPPC but I can watch H264 videos with VLC 3.0.12 and 3.0.11.1 with the latest Mesa version 20.3.5-0 on MintPPC. I use "My Videos" in the playlist for selecting the videos. Drag and drop also works with the playlist editor.

Thanks,
Christian

Ok, I misunderstood... The 3.0.12 without included FFmpeg indeed works, thanks! I got also the 3.0.11 of MintPPC to work again by installing Mesa 20.3.5-1. File open dialog box works here with both versions, but I have not yet run all the updates available for MintPPC. Probably best to make a partition backup before I continue updating...

@Xeno74

I run today all the available updates for MintPPC, with the consequence that any version of VLC (3.0.11/3.0.12) does not start anomore ('illegal instruction'). The mesa seems to still be 20.3.5-1. How to get them to work again?

I noticed now that Synaptic had in fact updated also the VLC to the standard v. 3.0.16 from the depot, even if I had protected the original 3.0.11 non-altivec VLC (and it's components) with the 'lock version' option! How is that possible?

I removed the v. 3.0.16 but the stand-alone v. 3.0.12 still does not start. What to do...?

Have you seen any error messages? Please try

Code: Select all

rm -rf .config/vlc
in your home directory.

Unfortunately I don’t have time for compiling a new version of VLC. You could ask Jeroen Diederen because of a new version of VLC.

Removing the config file did not help.

I reinstalled VLC 3.0.11 from the original .deb backages. That had the effect that both 3.011 and 3.0.12 now start, but trying load a video or a stream just causes the program to exit (giving the message 'illegal instruction' if run from terminal). Also trying to show in preferences the 'Input/codecs' causes exit and the same error message.

I did, but he has not lately been working actively with MintPPC. So, no help can be expected from him.

And as also Casey has stopped to work with Fienix, we are now without any actively supported distro :-(. The situation with PPC browsers is also catastrofal, they seem now to stop to work one after other with net banks and other necessary services.

Have we now reached the point where it is wisest to abandon X5000 as a Linux platform and jump to some better supported Linux architecture? But in any case I would not like to support Intel in any form with my pennies...!

Hi Roland,

Thanks a lot for asking Jeroen Diederen because of the non-altiVec version of the new VLC.

Debian is our future but the maintainer has decided to compile the packages with AltiVec support.

Further information: Altivec in baseline for ppc64? -- debian-powerpc@lists.debian.org

It's not a problem for our X1000 but some packages don't work on our X5000 e.g. VLC.

I think Casey develops further Fienix because he added the new InterWeb web browser to Fienix today. Link: InterWeb Web Browser with Goanna 4.4 Engine Released

Maybe I can compile a new non-altivec version of VLC if I have time.

Cheers,
Christian

64bit debian would be great to have, but at least the MIntPPC64 did not get even the desktop loaded when I once tested it. So, there is probably more to do than just to recompile VLC. But as there is also a new Firefox version available for it (that would probably solve the browser problems for a while) that would surely be worth the efforts.

That's good to hear! I will test it...

That would be great! Meanwhile, fortunately VLC still works with Fienix...
