Install CD boots kickstart from CD then boots from HD ...

Post by JohnFante »

I am trying to make a fresh install of 4.1FE from the latest install CD on a fresh partition. I, however, have a rather strange problem.

I have my CD drive connected to the first SATA port and the HD to the second, When I boot up, the install CD shows up in the amiga boot menu with my preset bootable partitions. The CD is in the bottom. So far so good.

When I select to boot from the CD the kickstart boots fine from CD but after the boot picture comes up it switches and boots the rest of the OS from my harddrives primary partition that is set to bootable.

I have set the "os4_bootdevice" variable in uboot to "auto" which should force the system to boot the rest of the OS from the source it has booted the kickstart files from but still the same behaviour.

Any suggestions?

Hi Niels :D

The bootpriority is 10 for DH0 that is my only bootable partition.

You should probably try setting it back to 0 - I'm not sure what the CD drive defaults to, but if it's 10 as well, that might explain it.

If you only have one bootable partition anyway, there's no reason to use a high boot priority on it.

Even on machines where I have many bootable partitions, I never use a higher boot priority than 4 on any of them.

You can force it to boot from the same volume that it loaded Kickstart modules from (normally it will always boot from the volume with the highest boot priority, but I think a CD has infinite priority).

Go into U-Boot command line and type:
"setenv os4_bootdevice auto"
"saveenv"

--- then it will always boot from the same volume it loaded KS from.

He already has that variable set, according to the first post above.

Are you sure about that "infinite" priority?

Decreasing the bootpriority to 4 did the trick. Now the install cd boots all the way :)

@Tony: I did set the os4_bootdevice to auto but on my system it did not do the trick on the CD. It works on the HD partitions but not the CD.

Great, glad it worked!

I think I remember the CD having a boot priority of 5 or 10 or something, but I don't remember where I heard that.

@Niels

Bootpriority of 10 (or was it 5?) for cd drives is historically used since amigaos 3.x (when HDDs/CDs were introduced).

You have maybe remembered it from your countless installations and changes to and on your HDDs, just like me :-)

Metting today with the same problem, but I boot from USB: I rawwrite ISO on USB, and then in the command line of uboot "usb reset" and then "boota". It starts booting kickstart modules from USB but then continues to loads from DH0 on HDD. And I also have "os4_bootdevice=auto" in boot.

The only solution i found is that:

1). boot from a USB stick while it also will load stuff from your system partition (if it didn't break much)

2). via media toolbox made it be non-bootable, save, reboot.

3). now boot from USB stick: everything will loads up only from the USB stick till the welcome screen, where you can use the media toolbox again together with installation and stuff.

So there you can or continue with WB (and repair all the stuff), or via media toolbox set your partition again as bootable, and install everything from scratch.
