How to install Linux kernel?

Post by HKvalhe »

Hi there, i am rather new to using Linux on Amiga. Last time i used Linux on Amiga, was for 7 years ago on an AmigaOne G4-XE.

I have a CD with Lubuntu 15.04 and latest Kernel 4.x.x Final for SAM460ex. While i'm sure there is an Installer in Lubuntu, i wonder about one thing.

How to install the latest Linux kernel?

Hope you can help :)

You need a working Linux installation before you worry about changing the kernel . The Installer installs Linux and a tested and working kernel automatically

I would suggest that you start with Debian Jessie instead of Lubuntu 15.04 as there is a problem with the colours in Lubuntu 15.04 at the moment.Temporary download link
to the newest installer wit a 3.19.2 kernel .

Once you get Linux up and running then You will be ready to lean how to add a newer kernel for Sams .

Once you are up and running and comfortable I can explain how to change the kernel.
It is not difficult just requires unpacking the archive and copying the modules to /lib/modules and the new kernel and canyonlands.dtb to /boot
and adding a new the new kernel information to the /boot/menu.lst file .

I have an external 2TB HDD I want to install Debian Jessie on my SAM460ex.

I read the install topic, but what file format to format my USB HDD? SFS2 with ulb.dn as boot file?

Two partitions for Linux? If so, how big should they be?

Thanks for any help in advance :)

The Installation needs to be on the first hard drive.
It will not work on any secondary ones.

Ah, so to understand. I rather stick with using AmigaOS 4.1 Final Edition then. Could have done this from the beginning when i was to install things on the internal harddrive.

Thank you again for explaining :) Take care.
