Hi All,

I compiled the latest Git kernel today. Unfortunately this kernel doesn't boot on the X5000 and X1000 anymore. It boots in a virtual e5500 QEMU machine.

I bisected today.
  1. Code: Select all

    git bisect start
  2. Code: Select all

    git bisect good 9f4ad9e425a1d3b6a34617b8ea226d56a119a717
    (Good: Linux 5.12)
  3. Code: Select all

    git bisect bad 9d31d2338950293ec19d9b095fbaa9030899dcb4
    (Bad: Merge tag 'net-next-5.13' -- 2021-04-29 11:57:23)
  4. git bisect good
  5. git bisect bad
  6. git bisect bad
  7. git bisect bad
  8. git bisect bad
  9. git bisect bad
  10. git bisect bad
  11. git bisect bad
  12. git bisect bad
  13. git bisect bad
  14. git bisect good

  17. git bisect bad
Result: 434fb1e7444a2efc3a4ebd950c7f771ebfcffa31 is the first bad commit.

drm/radeon/nislands_smc.h: Replace one-element array with flexible-array member in struct NISLANDS_SMC_SWSTATE

There is a regular need in the kernel to provide a way to declare having
a dynamically sized set of trailing elements in a structure. Kernel code
should always use “flexible array members”[1] for these cases. The older
style of one-element or zero-length arrays should no longer be used[2].

Use flexible-array member in struct NISLANDS_SMC_SWSTATE, instead of
    one-element array.

Also, this helps with the ongoing efforts to enable -Warray-bounds by
    fixing the following warnings:

The same commit is also available for SI graphics cards.

Linux Git

Please also test the alpha2 with Radeon SI graphics cards. It could be, that your AmigaOne doesn't boot. I only patched the alpha2 for NI Radeons.

Hi All,

Here is the third alpha of kernel 5.13 with the first PowerPC updates 5.13-1 for testing.

Further news:

From 4c16031cebe9b4d319974bf86af4f9823f911955 Mon Sep 17 00:00:00 2001
From: "Gustavo A. R. Silva" <gustavoars@kernel.org>
Date: Thu, 6 May 2021 18:28:39 -0500
Subject: drm/radeon/ni_dpm: Fix booting bug

Create new structure NISLANDS_SMC_SWSTATE_SINGLE, as initialState.levels
and ACPIState.levels are never actually used as flexible arrays. Those
arrays can be used as simple objects of type
NISLANDS_SMC_HW_PERFORMANCE_LEVEL, instead.

Currently, the code fails because flexible array _levels_ in
struct NISLANDS_SMC_SWSTATE doesn't allow for code that accesses
the first element of initialState.levels and ACPIState.levels
arrays:

drivers/gpu/drm/radeon/ni_dpm.c:
1690         table->initialState.levels[0].mclk.vMPLL_AD_FUNC_CNTL =
1691                 cpu_to_be32(ni_pi->clock_registers.mpll_ad_func_cntl);
...
1903:   table->ACPIState.levels[0].mclk.vMPLL_AD_FUNC_CNTL = cpu_to_be32(mpll_ad_func_cntl);
1904:   table->ACPIState.levels[0].mclk.vMPLL_AD_FUNC_CNTL_2 = cpu_to_be32(mpll_ad_func_cntl_2);

because such element cannot be accessed without previously allocating
enough dynamic memory for it to exist (which never actually happens).

That's why struct NISLANDS_SMC_SWSTATE should only be used as type
for object driverState and new struct NISLANDS_SMC_SWSTATE_SINGLE is
created as type for objects initialState, ACPIState and ULVState.

Also, with the change from one-element array to flexible-array member
in commit 434fb1e7444a ("drm/radeon/nislands_smc.h: Replace one-element
array with flexible-array member in struct NISLANDS_SMC_SWSTATE"), the
size of dpmLevels in struct NISLANDS_SMC_STATETABLE should be fixed to
be NISLANDS_MAX_SMC_PERFORMANCE_LEVELS_PER_SWSTATE instead of
NISLANDS_MAX_SMC_PERFORMANCE_LEVELS_PER_SWSTATE - 1.

Hi All,

The alpha5 of kernel 5.13 is available for testing.

New:
Download: linux-image-5.13-alpha5-X1000_X5000.tar.gz

Please test the kernels.

Thanks,

Re: Kernel 5.13

Post by xeno74 »

Hi All,

The kernel 5.13 has some unsolved issues and some not integrated patches. Currently it is not possible to release 5.13 kernels because of these issues. The kernel developers haven’t figured out where the problematic code is. We have bisected a lot but the Xorg issue overlaps with a boot issue. We can’t figure out the first bad commit for the Xorg issue if the kernel doesn’t boot in this time where the first bad commit is. Additionally the kernel doesn’t boot in a virtual e5500 QEMU machine anymore since the RC1 of kernel 5.13.
I will skip the kernel 5.13 test time until the RC1 of kernel 5.14.
I can‘t release these unreliable 5.13 kernels for the X1000 and X5000.
In the meantime I will release some stable 5.10 LTS kernels.
They are very stable and there weren’t any issues in the test time. The kernel 5.10 is very modern and offers the same features as the 5.11, 5.12, and 5.13 kernels and is more stable. If you have a new hardware and the kernel 5.10 doesn’t offer a driver for it then you can try the 5.11, 5.12, 5.13 kernels. Additionally I can try to backport the new driver.

Cheers,
Christian
