Hi. Tried to run Dhewm but so far failed to get it to work.

Strangely can't run it from desktop as it thinks binary is a picture. It wanted a libopenal that was missing. Didn't figure what the package was called on terminal so opened up Synaptic and it found it. It listed a whole Dhewm package so installed it.

Don't have the full game so grabbed a mod. Classic Doom 3 mod though the 3 is confusing as it looks to be modeled on number 1. Anyway because of age it's made for Windows and I don't know how to run it on Linux. Dhewm doesn't help as it doesn't list any basic commands for loading. And the man page is missing. Also the options have pluses in them which is weird. Is this some kind of hold off from the Windows days? I can't see why anyone would use a plus sign as a command switch. Do these programmers like to make things hard for themselves or other people as well? ;-)

Hi Hypex,

With which Linux distribution did you test Dhewm3? Which dhewm3 package did you test? Have you seen any error messages?

You can start it with ./dhewm3 but you'll need the game data from a Doom3 installation.

Further information: How to Install

I copied the .pk4 files to /home/christian/.local/share/dhewm3/base.

Cheers,
Christian

Fienix. After downloading the one here I found a Dhewm3 package in Synaptic. I also found the Doom3 package with files but it's really large. I am seeing an error about not finding a default config.

To work around this I downloaded the Classic Doom mod but so far failed to start it.

I tried that but cdoom lacks this exclusive default.cfg so I'm out. Irt does find the .pk4 files though. Will it only play mods if the full data is there as well? I can see why on the full version but not for an open source version.

I installed both and they work on Fienix. The Doom3 package contains the demo. I successfully tested these packages on my X1000 and X5000. You don't need to configure anything if you install the packages from the Fienix repository.
caseycullen wrote: Mon Apr 26, 2021 7:50 pm dhewm3_1.5.1.fienix.deb (includes engine only) and doom3_1.5.1.fienix.deb (includes app menu launcher, setup scripts and demo) have been added to the Fienix repo. The doom3 package will play the "shareware"/"demo" version until you copy the full game data files; to do this, copy your "base" directory to ~/.local/share/dhewm3.

Let me know if you have any issues.

Because of the size I tried CDoom from the official Dhwem mod page. I substituted the autoexec.cfg as the default.cfg which took it further. But there are textures missing. I suspect it's built off the Doom3 files and can't run stand alone. I read all the mods and thought I had found one that has all data included. Guess not.

I really just wanted to test it and try it out. 500MB seems rather large for a demo before unpacking. Guess I'll just have to leave my X1000 downloading for this one. :-)

Just out of interest will Dwelm and other 3d games only work with a 6000 or 7000 series Radeon card? I installed a few 3d games and Dwelm and all they do is give me black screen or black window and then exit. Is this because my R7 250 is not supported? Do I need to reconnect my older HD5450 to get them working? It would help if Linux or these games actually displayed an error message. If they can open a window or screen they can certainly report an error. :-?

Yes, you need to reconnect the HD5450. I would recommend a Radeon HD6XXX.
