Radeon HD6970 (Cayman XT)

Post by xeno74 »

I have bought a Radeon HD6970 (Cayman XT). :-) I successfully tested it with ubuntu MATE 16.04.6 LTS PowerPC and with Fedora 27 PPC64 today and the hardware 3D acceleration works great on both distributions. :-) The Cayman cards are the fastest and last released Radeon cards with support for hardware 3D acceleration on Linux PPC Big Endian. New cards are working but without hardware 3D acceleration.

Re: Radeon HD6970 (Cayman XT)

Post by sailorMH »

After long time with my A1X1000 with no hwaccel ( Radeon HD7970, Tahiti, SouthernIslands) I bougt Radeon HD6670 (Turks, NorthernIslands).
This is one of fastest 1U cards with HWaccel for linux. Not so powerfull like Xeno's HD6970, but far better then my HD7970 with no accel.
Just now my config:
slot1 (PCI-e x8): 2U HD7970 - for AmigaOS
slot2 (PCI-e x8): 1U HD6670 - for linux
Image
It works fine, on A1X1000 out of the box, no special xorg.conf is needed. I had to only revert changes made for southern island card.
HW acclelration works on all distros which I just now used (MintPPC-old, Debian8, Fedora+OpenSuse( thanks Xeno!), Fienix (thanks Casey Cullen!), glxgears varies from 1185 fps (Debian8) to 1436 fps (Fedora). Veru nice!!!

For comparison I equipped my Powermac G5 Quad with older card:
slot1 (PCI-e x16): 1U X1900 G5 edition - for MorphOS, Mac OSX
slot3 (PCI-e x8): 1U HD6570 - for linux
Image
It also works fine, but needs custom made xorg.conf, becouse X-windows does't recognize second card bus id correctly, and tries to work on X1900 ( which is doesn't work, as it is G5 edition. X1900 win flashed versions probably works).
But performance under linux is very nice - 3710 fps.

I tested several desktops with DebianSid on X1000 and found, that glxgears is fastest with Mate desktop - 2000fps. Then Lxde (1850 fps), and third lxqt (1800fps). As I remenber on Debian8 was fastest lxde. And lxde was many years my default desktop even on x86_64 world. Maybe is time to change.

Also glxgears are much faster with DebianSid then with other distros - second Fedora have 1436.
