By external HD do yo mean an external USB HDD? If so, yes you can install to an external HDD but it does complicate matters a little. The only real issue is the the drive needs to be connected after the machine has powered up. See the Linux installation manual for more information.will it be possible to install on an external HD?
I have Debian Wheezy, MintPPC on external USB HDD. I also have both on USB Flash Drives.
The best and recommended method is to have the Linux kernel installed on a CF card in connected to the on-board CF socket.

For sure it is because you tell it where to go in your settings
I done exactly this when I first installed Linux and on a .5TB myself right at the start when all the preliminary Linux testing was going on, unfortunately the harddrive died (at the time i'd recently brought 4 x HD drives 2nd hand from a raid set up) and I never tried another of the drives and never ran Linux again, now that is way more mature and there is a great distro, it might be worth while getting back into it, for testing purposes of course

How do you access the pdf install documention on the DVD without having to boot into Linux from the DVD.
Searching the DVD for ".PDF" yields no results so I'm assuming its unpacked to virtual drive when booting from DVD.
It means that with out a means to print it out from linux you need to write down the CFE set up instructions from the manual.
