Gnome 3.6 or higher on Ubuntu 12.04 LTS

Post by amigasociety »

Installed the new Ubuntu 12.04 LTS from the DVD I purchased at Amiwest on my X1000.

I now have a running install on my 2nd SATA drive and all is well.

Anyone else have any luck replacing the Unity Desktop environment with a newer Gnome 3.x?

The Unity Software App that checks for software to download has a Gnome 3.4 and I did install it but it appears unusable.

I do get a Gnome option now at boot and when Gnome is selected I get a Gnome environment that is barely responsive. I click activate and about 4 minutes later it comes up.

So it seems to come up but can't click or use anything.

Clicking the time up top menu bar, same minutes later it pops up.

Something is not right. Maybe the old 3.4 Gnome has issues or something just not right for X1000.

Can you switch to any other GUI before login?
It might be that some GNOME dependencies are not installed, try booting to something else (GUI)
and first adding GNOME 3.6

Surely, some more wise solutions will come up.

According to Pat wall (I think) its a feature of Ubuntu for PowerPC and that is why the Unity Desktop was selected for the Ubuntu Remix DVD.

I'm sure Pat can provide more details, if he sees your post.

From my testing Unity 3D or Gnome Shell will not work properly or at all on the X1000 with any Linux flavour :( I'm not sure exactly why since we have modern graphics cards with working 3D on the X1000. The Ubuntu Remix DVD is set to default to Unity 2D. The only version of Gnome I would recommend installing is Gnome Classic with No Effects which gives excellent performance and the Gnome 2 look and feel.

How is the Ubuntu install going for you?

All the best

Thanks, what about MATE (is it present), and while Unity looks fancy its very slow, so why taking
it as default? Same apps / features could be avail on much faster GUI? Or why no choice during install?

Unity was chosen as the default Desktop Environment as we are providing the default Ubuntu experience. MATE is not included or available as it is not part of the Ubuntu Project unlike LXDE or XFCE. There is no choice during install on either the X1000 Ubuntu Remix or indeed the Canonical standard x86/AMD64 Desktop install versions. The idea is to provide a simple straightforward way to install Linux with the minimum fuss.

If you would like to the ability to choose Desktops and make other changes and decisions during the installation the Alternate CD or doing a netboot install is the way to go. They are made available for this specific purpose.

I appreciate that Unity is not as quick as LXDE but I personally quite like Unity and don't find it slow :)

Hi Pat, Ubuntu 12.04 LTS as installed from the DVD is fine as long as I use Unity 2D. I prefer Gnome but Unity is not 1/2 bad. So I will uninstall that Gnome stuff since you say it does not work.

BTW, tip for whomever created the install docks that came with the DVD... Maybe point out an easy way to copy the Linux kernel to the CF card in the X1000 is via the Ubuntu Live DVD. It mounts the CF drive nice and clean in the left dock and I easily copied it from there.

Unless I am mistaken, the CF card in the X1000 is still not seen while in Amiga OS so best you copy it over while booted from the Live CD.

Unless someone installed linux on the X1000 before, they may be confused on how to get the file over to the CF card, etc... Maybe a quick pointer on the install pages will remind them of this easy way.

Great work... I have a nice install of Ubuntu now on my X1000. TJ

Good tip. Well carefull read on Linux guide and CFE menus shows how important 128MB card is. Shame we were not offered a bit bigger ones, and that
AmigaOS driver is not anywhere mentioned. It would help a lot. Good news is that you can keep several kernels and use them to boot multiple Linuxes.

Many thanks for the feedback and that is an excellent suggestion which I will pop into the an update of the manual very shortly :)

When will MATE be done?

Unity is not bad but somewhat slow, GNOME, KDE and LXDE work 101% where LXDE is fast and KDE is much more usable then Unity.

DO NOT REMOVE Unity by synaptic since Ubuntu will stop working.

Also, it must be hacked a bit to create a ROOT ACCOUNT.

Third, be careful not to use AUTO REINSTALL from Ubuntu Live DVD as it deletes Amiga partitions too ...
