still newbie on X1000 and video cards

Post by msalcedo »

New question..
I replaced the older video card that came with the X1000 with a 7750. It is great at 1080p.

But i would like to get 2k and maybe 4k.. (my newest monitors)

Any suggestions

I have Enhancer 2.1 with drivers (haven't installed on x1000 but have it)(sigh)

was working on basic stuff first but getting crazy from too much choice

Well if it helps the best you can get is an R9 280 model. Good for 3d I guess. I don't know of the availability of such cards. I looked it up a few years back when I needed a card. But all I found was expensive old stuff. I'm kind of picky and didn't want to spend hundreds of dollars on an old used card even if it was the best. I like new components for my X1000 even if it's old now. So at the time the best I could find new was an R7 250 in my price range.

@msalcedo

2560x1440 i was/am able to achive, 3940x2160 i was not (any hints welcome aswell)

Would you share your monitor prefs?

I wonder if anyone ever had this resolution working with AmigaOS4?
I suspect a glitch in the driver or screenmode (prefs), maybe because noone had capable hardware when it was developed.

I'm okay with, for the moment, 1920 by 1200 and my Radeon 7750 card

When I get an Radeon RX 560 card and using the drivers in Enhancer I should be able to get 2k, maybe 4k..
I report back.

I have heard that the video won't show in CFE? Is that right?

DO NOT, I repeat, DO NOT buy a RX card solely for your x1000.

It won't work, AT ALL, until there is a CFE update that supports those kind of cards, which, right now, there isn't (and probably never will be...outdated system, no one cares anymore, just with the onboard lan driver).

The RX card will not simply NOT work in CFE (and magically work later on), it will NOT get initialized and therefore will NOT be available to the system, which means in plain english, you will more or less brick your x1000 as long as the RX card is in place, since CFE won't ever go beyond gfx card init.

If you replace the card it will work again, of course

The X1000 is still a beast and fun to tinker with (once you get beyond all the hiccups the system *loves* to have).

Just throw us your questions, someone will be able to help :-)

The problem is that the VGA card setup routines in CFE are too dated and can only setup cards with a VGABIOS. Modern cards and anything you are likely to find in the RX series are designed for modern UEFI firmware, even though some common UEFI firmware still has the old fashioned BIOS look and interface.

Some how all other machines built since the X1000 like the Sam don't have this issue. Since they use UBoot which has been updated.

Likely due to the engineers who produced the board, the X1000 has this esoteric CFE firmware, which looks like a hack between CFE and OpenFirmware. And unlike the others the firmware was effectively closed source. It would have been better if a modern UBoot, like on the X5000, was compiled for the X1000 instead.

@Hypex

If closed-source means we are fucked, then maybe better to get UBoot to the X100 aswell.
