HDAudio driver for X1000 onboard sound

Post by mbrantley »

Lyle and everyone who worked on this driver (and tested it) .... but especially Lyle....

Congratulations! And thank you. Your work is very much appreciated, and the onboard audio on my Nemo is playing some sweet tunes.

One possible problem, however: Is the recording of line level from the blue line in jack working correctly for anybody? It seems way too "hot" here.... about the same as the mic in jack if my observation is correct. All I'm getting is overdriven, distorted sound when attempting to record from a line level source. I have no problems recording the same source to my SoundBlaster line in jack.

Or, do I have something set incorrectly somewhere for HDAudio line lin? Always possible...

Both "monitor" and "gain" affect the input signal, they are additive.
What I have done so far is to set gain hard right for mic signals(+40 dB) and hard left for line level signals(+0 dB)
and then adjust the Monitor to suit my preferences.

I am really happy that the four of us were able to get this driver working. :D
Davy, Alex, Rene and myself each spent a lot of hours towards this release.

I knew you'd be up late. LOL.

(EDIT: WAIT, STAND DOWN! PROBLEM LIKELY SOLVED. SEE BELOW)

I do have gain slammed all the way to the left and have tried monitor at various positions. The sound coming in still is too hot and there is distortion and clipping like crazy. Source is line level tape out from a stereo receiver and the level from that source is perfect for the SoundBlaster card's line in jack and also for my Zoom digital audio recorder (and my old tape decks too, of course).

Could be I'm missing something obvious, but not sure what it would be. I could provide short recorded clips if that would at all help.

I have used HD-Rec and also the far simpler AHIRecord for my tests.

EDIT: OK, I just tested with SoundFX and in its AHI controls gain was also to far left, but there was an "auto" box I checked next to gain. The slider settings were 1.0 to 100 but "auto" started taking the gain down to some double digit negative numbers and now level is correct.

Funny thing is.... now the level is correct in ALL my recording programs. It's as if SoundFX has "auto" calibrated AHI line input for the whole system so that slider to the far left is now lower than before.

I do not understand, but it's late and I go to bed now. heh.

Lyle, should I be using 48000 Hz? Doing so does seem to be solving some problems here.

That sounds quite curious indeed.
The gain and monitor levels have been working from here, and I was not aware of an "auto" setting.

But it's now 3:30AM, and I doubt I'll get very far with this tonight.

I will look into it in the morning (or as close to"morning" as I can manage).

Thanks for the feedback!

Heh heh.... and now I am more confused than ever. I did make a good 30 second recording with SoundFX but have been unable to reproduce that success.... it's back to the level being way too high. But, as you say, it is late. Let's get some rest. :)

This is awesome! Thanks Lyle.

Audio in and out, means my daughter will love playing with the mic! Can anyone recommend an easy AOS4 sound recorder / distorter?

Also, is anyone up to porting the Qt app Mumble.... ;) http://mumble.sourceforge.net/Main_Page
