A1XE - HDD woes again!

Post by OldAmigan »

I recently decided to have yet another go at reviving my A1XE.

I've tried several PATA HDD's both on the internal IDE channels and on a Sil0680 card.

At some stage, my machine will start to hang up and rebooting usually results in a dead HDD.

I decided to try an IDE DOM (64Gb) instead, and the machine ran well for a good while, until I took it to a meeting - when it locked up again and I ended up with a dead DOM.

Now I have a SIL3112 card, seated in the furthest slot from the AGP and I've fitted a 240Gb SSD, which I have partitioned as DF0:- 10Gb, DF1: as 120Gb,DF2: as 115Gb and SWAP as 5Gb

I've set them as SFS0 for DF0: and SFS2 for DF2 & 3, but I can't format any of them for some reason.

I've just scanned through a couple of threads here to see if there's anything similar - there doesn't seem to be.

I've set all the block sizes to 4096. Could this be my problem?

The device names look strange.

DFx: are normally used for floppy disks. I am not sure if there is anything in the system which directly expects a DFx: to be a floppy, but at any rate it's just begging for confusion.

I'd recommend you use names like DH0:, DH1: etc instead.

Best regards,

Niels
