No. You don't have to overwrite the SD card to install linux. You can just install to a hard drive.
But, You can "choose" to, as Alex proved.

It's user error to choose the wrong device at the install prompt. (I did this too..long ago, grin)

I don't know if this will fix your question.. but

If you register you amigaos 4.1, you can then download the amigaos 4.1 update 1 from the Hyperion site

Did you change the dvd drive? or video card?

But what are you going to connect it (case lead) to.. a sound card with a hd audio header?

an easy way on the pc.
IF you are using a pc... and you have the iso file

and using Win32DiskImage, plug in usb stick, then..

run Win32DiskImage (in admin mode) select the amigaOS.iso and let it do it's work.

You should have a usb/amigaOS stick that will boot just like a dvd

(from my experience, video cards are a bigger issue then dvd drives. but..

Have you tried to boot from a usb stick?

Believe it or not...
A video card can work with uboot and not amigaOS..

Please, what video card?
