OS4.1 install on Sam460ex HD not recognised

Post by JosDuchIt »

I described my problem here
http://wiki.amigaos.net/wiki/UserDoc:How_AmigaOS_Works
I am getting desperate

In short, my sam460ex HD is dead, and I was unable to restart my Sam 440,
So I Replaced HD by one of my old Sam440
Reformatted a partition , made it bootable, set the others to non bootable,
Was able to access all partitions using the OS4.1FE

installed OS4.1 FE on the boot partitition
Set uboot bott devices to
1 3x12 SATA HD
2 3114 SATA HD
3 460 SATA2 HD

Checked
pci
... 0x3512 Mass storage controller ..
....
sata info 0
...
SATA device 1: Model: ST9160821AS ...

Supports 48-bit addressing
..............'... 149.0 GB (312581808 x 512)

On booting the HD is not recognised ,
I get msg
Parthenogenesis (ub21b) version 0.91
No menu.1st or Kicklayout found

Then

AOS4 FLB

Loadsector error when reading from block 0
FLB no SLB found in any '..........'

===============
To disentangle the error messages
I tested
With only one active device:
The loadsector error is generated with the 460 Device
The parthenogenesis message ( No menu.1st or kicklayout with the 3x12 device

All state "hard disk not found" or something like that

Help really appreciated,

I've run into the Kockstart being loaded and never seeing a working filesystem afterwards...
but that was when I was playinhg around with the KickLayout to work out essentials vs optional and grouping items together.

You managed to get a single boot of the SLB/Parthenope on the HD but after a setting change it stops from the next boot?

Or does it not boot from the HDD when it is attached at all from first attempt?

"Cockstart" would be a great name for system kernel, wouldn't it? :)

How were you able to run OS4.1FE? On the Sam 460 using a CD? On the Sam 440 using the HD you reformatted?
installed OS4.1 FE on the boot partitition
How? On which machine? If you install a system for a Sam 440, that system will not run on a Sam 460.
Set uboot bott devices to
1 3x12 SATA HD
2 3114 SATA HD
3 460 SATA2 HD
Is that on the Sam 460? You can't have all those devices on a 460, only one of them. Which one is the HD connected to?

Looks good so far.

U-Boot is trying to read from device "3x12". Is that where your HD is connected? If not, it will give an error and abort.

Whichever device interface you want to use, set ALL the "Boot1/Boot2/Boot3" to that device, don't try one of each.
My guess is that in your panic, you are trying all at once, when you should be concentrating on just the one you know it should be.
Calm down and think it through carefully.
cheers

@tonyw
I used the sam460ex bootbDvd to use OS4.1FE, on my Sam460ex
I was able then to access the aos parttions of the Sam440 HD with which I replaced the dead HD
I then formatted one of them and make it bootable
At the end of my mail i reported what I got as response with the 3 HD boot possibilities U-boot offers
I guess 3x12 is the right one:it was the one set before my HD failed.

Elwood replied on Amigans
You once installed Parthenope on this HD. Just install SLB (with MediaToolbox) and it will work.
My answer was
--------------------
@Elwood
The message was:
Parthenogenesis (ub21b) version 0.91
No menu.1st or Kicklayout found

As ithe HD was used in my Sam440 ,how come the SLB has gone?

Using mediatoolbox,i found guidance how to install SLB
Howeverit seems (.warning) thati I will lose the data on my other partitions.
-------------------

Of course I don't want to lose the data which are part of my backup solution.
Thinking more clearly I think I will buy a new HD and install os4.1 frmscratch.

However, my Sam440 seems to have died just when I wanted to use it just a few days ago to restore data on the 460: a power on problem that was. The red led is flashing just one and then nothing happens
Result two sams not working anymore. :(((
A bit much to cope with at my age

What I would like to achieve (hoping that the Sam440 power on problem can be solved)
- have two HD both able to boot as well in the 440 as in the 460ex
- of course from a different partition

It seems that is more difficult than I expected: ican' t do it for the 440 HD only after having backed up all of its partitions again (they were copied on the sam460ex HD)

Could it be that the SLB is specific for the machine and that this is altogether impossible, or can the SLB be updated without losing data ???????

Old thread but still...
can the SLB be updated without losing data ?
Yes SLB is written to the first sectors of the disk so it will not overwrite any partition data. As a proof of that, you can update the SLB without problem.
