Don't know if this is useful, but it took me a while to figure it out. Thanks to user k1l from IRC channel. In order to force your machine (ubuntu, powerpc, yaboot) to boot to shell mode and not gui:
1. Enter in terminal:
sudo systemctl set-default multi-user.target
2. Reboot
Voila !
If you need to reverse this:
1. Enter in terminal:
sudo systemctl set-default graphical.target
2. Reboot.
Thanks k1l !!

Hi All,
Lubuntu and ubuntu MATE have stopped the building of the daily build ISOs for PowerPC but I was able to upgrade ubuntu MATE 17.04 PowerPC today.
Links:
I will update my installed development version of ubuntu MATE 17.04 as long as possible. After that I will try to release an unofficial ubuntu MATE 17.04 USB img with the latest Firefox, Thunderbird, and some nice wallpapers for the X5000 and X1000. I will use the name "MATE PowerPC Remix 2017" for the unofficial ubuntu MATE 17.04 PowerPC.
Cheers,
Christian

Hi All,
I released the first test version of the MATE PowerPC Remix 2017 today.
New:
Instructions for booting the MATE PowerPC Remix 2017 from a USB flash drive
Download and unpack the file and copy it with the command dd to a USB flash drive. For my USB flash drive (/dev/sdd):
X1000
X5000
The login details are as follows:
Username of root has the password amigaone
Username of amigaone has the password amigaone
You can boot with the kernel 4.10 as well. I would recommend you to use a fast USB flash drive. For example: SanDisk Ultra Fit USB 3.0 Flash Drive.
Please test it.
Cheers,
Christian

If Xorg doesn't work with your SI Radeon graphics card, please replace the radeon video driver with the fbdev driver in the xorg.conf (/etc/X11/xorg.conf) on your USB flash drive.

Re: (X)(L)ubuntu (MATE) 17.04 Zesty Zapus
I was able to boot the MATE PowerPC Remix 2017 with using the label AMIGAONE with the new stable longterm kernel 4.9.10 and with the initrd.img-4.9.10 from the USB flash drive.
The best thing with using the label is, that you don't need to know the /dev location of your USB flash drive.

Re: (X)(L)ubuntu (MATE) 17.04 Zesty Zapus
I had some problems getting it succeeded. I was forced to format the fat part. and copy the kernel into it.
It goes very slowly with me but it's probably my usbdisk there is slow.

Many thanks for testing! Yes, I think your USB flash drive is too slow. There are big performance differences between USB2 flash drives.
