Any connection with the Vitesse VSC8221 Gigabit Ethernet PHY mentioned in the motherboard manual (p. 8, "2.4 Ethernet")?

Which kernel do you use for the A-EON Live Remix distribution?

Assuming you mean 12.04 LTS, I had been using 4.3 mostly until you scolded me about that. Since then, 4.1, until my current launch with 4.2, which I had tried to get MATE with.

The title of this thread reminds me: In the course of trying to install MATE, at step 9 I get
dummy0: Unknown ...
enp0s 20f3: OA Semi, Inc PWRficient ....
eup6s6: Realtek ...
tun10: unknown ...
The on-page comment says the first one listed should be the correct one, but I am very uneasy with that "unknown" bit. And the second one is the connection that keeps getting disconnected in Ubuntu if I don't disconnect it myself. So I go with the Realtek. Surely that's not why initrd.gz can't find a disk on my system?

@All

Does anyone have this problem with the internal PWRficient Gigabit Ethernet network device too?

Ever since moving from kernel 4.1 => 4.3 better than 4.2. Getting the same wired network disconnection from time to time and once in a while a boot won't have network at all.

Did you install Lubuntu 15.10 with a kernel 4.x?

This is the internal network device.
I've been googling "network" and "network device" for a half hour or so, and I still don't get it. I don't think I have a network, so why would I need a network device?

This "PA Semi PWRficient Gigabyte Ethernet thing has become rather annoying again, and disconnecting it seems to have no ill effect. Is there a way to disconnect it permanently, and would I be sorry if I did?

Do you have this problem with all kernels? Please try to remove the connection with the right click on the Networkmanager icon and select edit connections. After that select Wired.

You have two wired connections there. Klick on Edit to find out which of both is the P.A. Semi Ethernet. If you know which of both is the P.A. Semi Ethernet then you can delete it.

I had one "wired connection" and one "ethernet connection." The "wired" one was the culprit, now deleted, supposedly.
