edit: I should have added that I have 2GB of memory and don't really need swap.
If you have 2 GB of memory, the kernel will never swap anyway, as it cannot address more than 2 GB of virtual address space.

So whatever you are experiencing cannot be due to swapping.

If it's caused by a 16-bit Use Count running over, then that implies > 65536 Opens, which in a day means about one per second. That's an awful lot of Opens! One per second from a clock app?

To test it, I would turn off AmiDock and all Commodities.

Also, you can go into ScreenBlanker Prefs and turn the delay times from 30 mins down to a minute or tow, just to test it. Then you don't have to wait for hours.

Tony,

Having turned various items and combinations of items in WB startup, I've come to the conclusion that the Screen Blanker module is what's causing the problem here.

Are there issues with the module, (update4) or is there just something wrong with mine?

Paul

Paul,

If you are convinced that it's the screen blanker, can you now describe exactly how to reproduce the fault?

In particular, what programs (if any) do I need to have running in the background for the fault to occur?
Does it happen with a bare Update 4 system?
Does it happen on any machine or only an XE?
cheers

I know this is old, but I'm curious about why it's no longer a problem for me. Since I've stopped using the old RA-OWB, I'm not having this problem anymore. Was there a known problem with Joerg's OWB that might cause such a lock-up problem?

I must reopen this old thread because it seems that the screenblanker issue pop it again !

On my system the screenblanker problem was fixed from Update 4 and then i didn't have any other problems with further updates, however after reinstalling AmigaOS from scratch (in order to solve another issue reported at: http://forum.hyperion-entertainment.biz ... 1&start=20) the problem reapper :-/

In short the problem is and still exactly the same i've reported in my first post on this thread:
Leaving the monitor turned on for a certain period of time will active the auto-switch off option (this is availible on the ScreenBlaker module) and this works ok in general, the problem arrive if the monitor will be auto switched off (black screen) for a very long time, (don't know specifically how many time) in this case the user can't be able to reactive the screen moving the mouse as always, simply nothing happen and the screen remain black and you need to reboot
I'm running AmigaOS 4.1 Update 6 + All latest components from AmiUpdate

Disable the Boing Ball ScreenBlanker, your issue will then go away. For some reason, BB ScreenBlanker stopped working with update 4. I have never been able to get it working on various machines.
What happens is, monitor goes into standby mode, then launches BB ScreenBlanker for some unknown reason. It crashes and hangs machine in a standby state.

If you remove it, it will stop it from happening. If it does simular after doing this, then press ESC key, it will then turn monitor back on.

As it happened on every machine (sam 440, 460, A1, Micro A1 and X1000), I assumed someone already had.
