The five steps listed here had no obvious effect, but the second of the next batch was very revealing.
If this does not work, please advise of the following:
1) The manufacturer of your printer
2) The output when you enter "lpstat -t" in MATE Terminal

For reasons that I don't recall, I found it necessary to connect my printer through my Raspberry Pi. When I click a "Print" I normally get "HP_OfficeJet_Pro_8710" and "HP_OfficeJet_Pro_8710_raspberrypi" in the PRINT window, and I habitually choose the latter. When I try to print from LibreOffice today, that is marked "Paused; Rejecting Jobs." But the other one has "raspberrypi" under Location, and if I choose that, it prints fine. "HP_OfficeJet_Pro_8710_01DACB" is also listed, with an ink low warning, and it too prints. Weird, but problem solved.
Just in case there might be a clue to the weirdness, here is what came up for uname and lsusb:
fienix@Fienix:~$ uname -a
