Back in MATE (also unusually slow!) GParted tells me /dev/sad7 AKA FIENIX has a Size of 100.95 GiB, with 6.47 GiB Used, and 16.83 MiB Unused. What's going on?
Here you are:

Thank you! This dumb guy thought that was only for when putting it on a USB drive.

OK, now to get this new thing set up!

@caseycullen

I gave Fienix a try on our development board based on the NXP T2080 CPU (e6500)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v66P2HaH4M0

I have installed Fienix on a compact flash, then used the onboard SATA with the following adapter
https://www.amazon.com/Adapter-Compact- ... B0797LNYXT

The video was made with an USB3 capturing device and the echo you ear on the video is due to my lack of knowledge on how o set it up, there is no echo effect on the sound via HDMI.

Sorry for invading the X5000 thread with an alien hardware, but I thought it would be nice to know that Fienix works apparently well on the e6500 cpu.

Many thanks for this video! It's very impressive to see Fienix on the e6500 cpu. Fantastic system!

I've been having ups and downs with Fienix. More ups so far, the most surprising and delightful of which was being able to click on https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v66P2HaH4M0 in an earlier post and see and hear the video. It works after a fashion on my MATE 16.04, but getting Youtube to work there was a real hassle, and I still wouldn't be able to get sound on REMIX.

My first real downer was when I put the .img on my hard drive and immediately ran out of memory. Christian reminded me how to fix that, but is was too late. Many important things were missing, including Office, MATE Terminal, System Tools, and Firefox. I had to re-format the drive and reload the .img.

Now I wonder if some remaining negative aspects are unique to my system, or are they common?
1. When I boot Fienix, I get a screen of green and purple (see attached photo) with a text cursor in the middle, which changes sometimes to a cursor arrow. I have been able to get past that, to a proper log-in screen, sometimes by simply pressing the Enter key.
2. On the left of the Fienix desktop, three icons come and go. I have been able to keep them afloat at least once long enough to click the middle one and launch Firefox.
3. When I try to download something from the internet, the "You have chosen to open ..." window pops up. I choose the "Save File" option and click OK. Firefox always vanishes from the Desktop.

I can't use the Log File Viewer. How do I get it to give me permission? (I know the root password.) I tried the Terminal, with these results:

Code: Select all

fienix@Fienix:/var/log$ sudo nano user.log
[sudo] password for fienix:
fienix is not in the sudoers file. This incident will be reported.
fienix@Fienix:/var/log$ su nano user.log
su: user nano does not exist
fienix@Fienix:/var/log$
I haven't been able to figure out how to get fienix into the sudoers file.

Hi Kilaueabart,

Fienix is based on Debian. That means the sudoers file isn’t configured yet. Please open a shell and use the command su for changing to the root user.

root password: rootAdminPW

After that you can read the log files.

Cheers,
Christian

Thanks, Christian. It still took me an hour googling how to use "su" before I finally figured it out.

Not sure what I expect to find in the logs, but was a bit horrified that user.log from December 12 had thousands of repetitions of basically this:

Code: Select all

Dec 12 20:54:08 Fienix org.mate.panel.applet.BriskMenuFactory[4781]: Crash Annotation GraphicsCriticalError: |[0][GFX1]: Unknown image format 1 (t=8.0679) |[316][GFX1]: Unknown image for$
Dec 12 20:54:08 Fienix org.mate.panel.applet.BriskMenuFactory[4781]: Crash Annotation GraphicsCriticalError: |[0][GFX1]: Unknown image format 1 (t=8.0679) |[316][GFX1]: Unknown image for$
Dec 12 20:54:08 Fienix org.mate.panel.applet.BriskMenuFactory[4781]: Crash Annotation GraphicsCriticalError: |[0][GFX1]: Unknown image format 1 (t=8.0679) |[316][GFX1]: Unknown image for$

I don't know how much longer the lines were after the "$" cutoff, but what a waste of storage!

By the way, one of the things that came up in my google search was simple instructions for adding a user to the sudoers. Here is the result of my attempt:

Code: Select all

root@Fienix:/home/fienix# adduser fienix sudo
bash: adduser: command not found
root@Fienix:/home/fienix# apt-get install adduser
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
adduser is already the newest version (3.118).
The mystery is if adduser is not to be found, how can it be reported as the newest version?

Hi kilaueabart,

1) I haven't experienced this or heard it from anyone else yet. If you can include the picture it might help. What video card are you using?
2) The icons will slide out when you place your mouse on the center-left side of your desktop. This lets you launch common apps without having to open any menus or go to the desktop.
3) This appears to be a bug with Firefox-ESR. Try installing the non ESR version of Firefox until it's fixed. You can have both Firefox and Firefox-ESR installed at the same time if you want.

"Many important things were missing, including Office"
LibreOffice is not installed by default to keep the image size down as not everyone needs a full office installation. Use Synaptic to install.

I know Christian helped you get this figured out, but just for general information...
About su/sudo:
su: gives you root permissions until you change back to your username with "su username", for example "su fienix"
sudo: gives you root permission for one command at a time
I chose to use su in Fienix as it is the Debian standard.

How to use su:
Type "su"
It will ask for the password; enter "rootAdminPW"
You now have root privileges until you type "su fienix"; you can type any command you would normally need "sudo" for without typing "sudo", for example "nano user.log"

Alternatively, you can right-click on the folder that contains the log and click "Open as Administrator".

The error appears to be an endianness issue. I'll look into a mitigation.
