Fienix - New PowerPC Distro

Post by caseycullen »

We need an up-to-date, modern distribution specifically for PowerPC, with a repository that allows you to choose what to install, full of tested software that will run without problems. So I decided to make Fienix.

The Fienix disk image (downloadable from the website) contains only a minimal install, but apt and synaptic are configured to connect to the Fienix repository so you can download anything else you want using Synaptic. I have tested everything in the repository on my X5000, packages are patched/fixed/reconfigured wherever needed - there may still be minor bugs in some apps but everything runs and is functional.

lol this has taken me literally hundreds of hours so I hope at least one other person likes it

I could also use some help if anyone is interested.
-revised instructions for using disk ID instead of the dev path
-instructions for how to use on an X1000 or Sam series
-instructions for how to use on Open Firmware (Power Mac); I'm currently working on this one
-testing with new kernels
-install option using DebianInstaller or similar, what's needed to do this?
-anything else; I'm totally open to collaboration, contributors, suggestions, etc.
-also see the To Do list

Excellent. Am downloading this right now to try out. A couple of questions:

1. What distro is it based around and version.
2. Are more up to date versions of Firefox, VLC etc
3. Are you compiling the packages yourself? is there a list of associated packages.

It astounds me of the level support you, Xen074, Spectre660 and others provide to our small community kudos to you all. I will do what I can to support.

Hi Casey,

I am really impressed! :-)

- Great idea!
- Fantastic design!
- New modern userland (Debian)
- The website is modern and fast!
- Beautiful wallpapers
- We don’t need the MATE PowerPC Remix anymore

Many thanks for your work! I will test it on my X1000 as soon as possible. Well done! I will support you as good as I can.

Cheers,
Christian

Up and running, installation went very smoothly. Very polished, need to tweak a few things like my sound output but looks very sweet. Any chance of including Midori in your repository? Firefox works well but i like using Midori for normal browsing. Congratulations on producing something so polished.

I was able to download it today. After that I copied it with 'dd' to an empty partition on my AmigaOne X1000. It works really fantastic.

Screenshot of Fienix with the kernel 4.20-rc5 on my AmigaOne X1000:

I created a Fienix thread in the X1000 subforum: Fienix - New PowerPC Distro - Platform: AmigaOne X1000 - Linux Only

Casey, many many thanks for this distro and bye bye MATE PowerPC Remix. :-)

Thanks! I haven't tried the onboard Ethernet because I'm virtually certain it won't work. That's more of a kernel issue, and I use the kernels xeno builds in Fienix.
