OK, these settings details were a step forward. I can now smoothly play a 30-second Sample.mp4 that somehow turned up in home/bart/Videos. (It won't touch a couple AVI files there.) I found a 172-minute video DVD and tried that. It plays, poorly, for 48 seconds and stops. All video is silent. Everything is silent in my Ubuntu. I think I'd rather have sound than video, if I had to, and could, choose.

But I have to take back about not touching the AVI files. True, if I click Open in SMPlayer and go to Videos, it doesn't list the AVI files. However, if I right-click on the AVI icon and choose Open With > Enqueue in SMPlayer, they play beautifully, much better than they used to in the X1000. Except silently.

You need to have sound working to get any sound .
The options that work for me are either HDMI sound or a USB sound card.
For the HDMI sound you need to have a monitor that supports HDMI sound and is connected to your video card via a HDMI cable.
This is the model USB sound card that I use. Similar cards should also work .

You then have to Identify the sound card in sound prefs and set is as the default option .
You can disable any options you don’t use or don’t work in your configuration.
You can access the sound prefs via the Application menu : sound & Video : Sound
Or by right clicking on the Sound Icon on the upper right hand Menu Bar.

Set the device for output .

If I used that, I wonder if I would have to keep switching my speakers between that for Ubuntu and the regular sound jack for sound from the Amiga.

Probably makes more sense to just use the Amiga side, or the Raspberry, for YouTube and music. But I am a little suprised that Ubuntu can't match them!

Lot of factors involved including some X5000 limitations.
Someone with a working pciex1 CMI8738 might get it working under Both AmigaOS 4.1 and Linux .

I ended up ordering a USB sound card, and it came two days ago. Meanwhile sound had started working, to my surprise. I could click on an MP3 file and get nice sound. I'm not sure if it would play the file all the way through -- I was just testing to see if it worked. But then there was a Youtube song I wanted to hear all of, and it worked fine for 37 seconds. Then it quit, and I haven't been able to play anything again since.

So I went ahead and tried the new USB card (Sound Preferences says it is "CM 108 Audio Controller 1 Output /2 Inputs Analog Stereo Output + Analog Mono Input ." The speaker test works just fine. (The speaker test seems to work fine with everything, whether it will play an audio file or not.) But when I try to play an MP3 some tiny window opens and closes so fast I can't make it out, but I have reason to believe it is VLC media player. I removed the USB thing and tried to set things up the way they had worked before, which came out on the Output page as "CMI8738/CMI8768 PCI Audio (CMI8738/C3DX PCI Audio Device) Analog Stereo, Connector: Analog Output," when it was sort of working -- I screenshot the window. But I haven't been able to get it back as it was. I went back to the USB card; with that the only Connector allowed is "Speakers."

I wonder if the Kernel log provides any useful clues as to what is going wrong. It does show a number of attempts without the USB card, re-insertion of the USB card, and one attempt at sound with it:

I tried googling "unhandled signal 4 ubuntu" but only got Windows-related hits. But it must relate somehow to my VLC problem. I can no longer even open VLC for more than about a millisecond from the menu.

Hi Kilaueabart,

Unfortunately the VLC player from the default repository doesn't work on the X5000. Please use another media player instead. I use audacious for example.
