Hi All,

Canonical has released the final ISO images of Ubuntu 18.04 (Bionic Beaver) [1] [2] [3] [4]. Unfortunately Canonical removed the PowerPC architecture last year. Consequently Canonical will not releasing PowerPC images for the version 18.04. Ubuntu MATE 16.04 will continue to support 32-bit PowerPC until 2019 and Canonical will offer security updates for the version 16.04 until 2021. The latest LTS release is 16.04.4 [5]. Fortunately we have a fork of the last ubuntu MATE (17.04), which I have updated and released as the MATE PowerPC Remix 2017. Today, I released the version 0.9 of the MATE PowerPC Remix 2017.

New:
  • Mesa updated to version 18.0.0
  • XawTV 3.103-4 added (X11 program for watching and recording television with a TV tuner)
  • AleVT 1.6.2-5 added (X11 program for browsing and searching Teletext/Videotext)
  • Radio 3.103 added (A ncurses-based FM radio application)
  • tvtime 1.0.2 added (A high quality television application for use with video capture cards)
  • Kradio4 4.0.8 added (Comfortable radio application)
  • Kaffeine 2.0.5 added (A media player with digital TV support)
  • Yabause 0.9.14-2 added (Sega Saturn emulator)
  • Screenfetch 3.7.0 added
  • unrar 5.4.5 added
  • Keepassx 2.0.3-1 added (Free/open-source password manager)
  • Qterminal 0.7.1 added
  • Guake 0.8.8 added (Drop-down terminal)
  • The distribution has been completely rebranded (Thanks to Casey)

Which apps shall I add to the MATE PowerPC Remix 2017 version 1.0?

After installing, you could update it to version 16.04.4 LTS if you like.

Hi,

Thanks for releasing another update!

Please add FreeCAD, If it works of course. :)

And if you have the time, could you please test if Onshape.com works on your machine? (I don't mean the front page obviously). It would make FreeCAD almost superfluous.
I tried with the X1000 and X5000 but I don't have a Linux-compatible 3D Graphics card, so maybe that is preventing Onshape to work on my LamigaX.
I'm reluctant to invest in yet another graphics card if it's not working at the end.

best regards

Hi Christian.
I have installed ubuntu remix-17-9. Everything seems to work fine. I have install Danish language and keyboard. However, there is an error that makes it impossible for me to install deb files myself. See attached picture.

Hi Musa,

Thanks a lot for testing! Could you please install the packages with dpkg?

For example if you have some packages in a directory:

Code: Select all

sudo dpkg -i *
Or if you have all dependencies installed then

Code: Select all

sudo dpkg -i zenmap_7.40-1_all.deb
(For example installing Zenmap)

I installed Zenmap 7.40 for testing the package system today. It works without any problems. (see screenshot)

Image

Please try it.

Thanks,
Christian

Hi All,

I was able to boot the MATE PowerPC Remix 2017 0.9 with the RC6 of kernel 4.17 in a virtual e5500 QEMU 2.12.0 machine with a VirtIO graphics card.

Canonical removed the PowerPC architecture last year. Consequently Canonical will not releasing new PowerPC images and updates for new distributions like 17.10, 18.04, and 18.10. Ubuntu MATE 16.04 will continue to support 32-bit PowerPC until 2019 and Canonical will offer security updates for the version 16.04 until 2021. The latest LTS release is 16.04.5. Fortunately we have a fork of the last ubuntu MATE (17.04), which I have updated and released as the MATE PowerPC Remix 2017. The latest version is 0.9. For this version there are some updates available.

You only need to copy the image with 'dd' to a partition on your USB flash drive.

Create two partitions on your USB flash drive. A small FAT16 boot partition and a big partition without a file system. Copy the Linux kernel to the first small FAT16 boot partition. After that copy the MATE PowerPC Remix img with 'dd' to the second big partition.

For example the partition /dev/sdd2 on a USB flash drive:

Code: Select all

sudo dd if=MATE_PowerPC_Remix_2017_0.9.img of=/dev/sdd2
You can boot it with the following commands (for example from /dev/sdd2):

Code: Select all

setenv bootargs "root=/dev/sdd2 rootdelay=5"

Code: Select all

boot -elf -noints -fatfs usbdisk0:vmlinux-4.19

Hi All,

A big apology to everyone who uses Radeon SI graphics cards. The MATE PowerPC Remix 0.9 doesn't have a FBDEV driver installed so Xorg doesn't work with Radeon SI graphics cards. You can still install it if you like.

Instructions:
  1. Please login via SSH to the MATE PowerPC Remix
  2. You can get the FBDEV driver with the following command:

    Code: Select all

    wget http://old-releases.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/pool/main/x/xserver-xorg-video-fbdev/xserver-xorg-video-fbdev_0.4.4-1build5_powerpc.deb
  3. After that you can install it with

    Code: Select all

    sudo dpkg -i xserver-xorg-video-fbdev_0.4.4-1build5_powerpc.deb
  4. Then reboot your AmigaOne. Xorg works with Radeon SI graphics cards now.
You can also get much more packages for the MATE PowerPC Remix via the following link: http://old-releases.ubuntu.com.
